Domi­nant­nou úlo­hou útva­ru čest­nej strá­že je repre­zen­tá­cia pre­zi­den­ta Slo­ven­skej repub­li­ky, ozb­ro­je­ných síl Slo­ven­skej repub­li­ky a Slo­ven­skej repub­li­ky. Vyko­ná­va čest­né strá­že­nie síd­la pre­zi­den­ta a hos­tí pre­zi­den­ta v jeho síd­le. Vyko­ná­va vojen­ské poc­ty, naj­mä pri ofi­ciál­nych náv­šte­vách pred­sta­vi­te­ľov iných štá­tov. V čase voj­ny, voj­no­vé­ho sta­vu, výni­moč­né­ho sta­vu a núdzo­vé­ho sta­vu plní úlo­hy ochra­ny pre­zi­den­ta (mil​.sk). Čest­né strá­že­nie sa vyko­ná­va po celú dobu prí­tom­nos­ti pre­zi­den­ta v Pre­zi­dent­skom palá­ci, spra­vid­la v pra­cov­ných dňoch od 8.00 hod. do 18.00 hod. Strie­da­nie stráž­nych sa koná kaž­dých 60 minút, kaž­dú celú hodi­nu. Strie­da­nie strá­ží sa koná cez pra­cov­né dni o 12.00 hod (pre​zi​dent​.sk). Dôs­toj­ní­ci Čest­nej strá­že sú vyzb­ro­je­ní šab­ľou dlhou 985 mm. Čepeľ je z ušľach­ti­lej oce­le, poš­va zo smre­ko­vé­ho dre­va potia­hnu­té­ho kožou. Muž­stvo je pri zvlášt­nych prí­le­ži­tos­tiach vyzb­ro­je­né kre­sad­lo­vou puš­kou s hlav­ňou dlhou 1080 mm. Útvar tiež pou­ží­va samo­na­bí­ja­ciu puš­ku vzo­ru 52 a puš­ku vzo­ru ⁵²⁄₅₇, obe čes­ko­slo­ven­skej výro­by (mil​.sk).

Jed­not­ka čest­nej strá­že bola zria­de­ná prvý krát kon­com roka 1968. Po vzni­ku Slo­ven­skej repub­li­ky sa stráž­ny prá­por reor­ga­ni­zo­val na Pluk hrad­nej a čest­nej strá­že. Mal dva prá­po­ry, jeden plní úlo­hy pre pre­zi­den­ta Slo­ven­skej repub­li­ky a dru­hy pre ostat­ných ústav­ných čini­te­ľov a naj­vyš­ších vojen­ských pred­sta­vi­te­ľov. Mies­ta výko­nu čest­né­ho strá­že­nia boli Bra­ti­slav­ský hrad, Pri­ma­ciál­ny palác a od 30.9.1996 Gras­sal­ko­vi­čov palác (Pre­zi­dent­ský). Od 1.8.2001 vzni­kol samos­tat­ný útvar Čest­nej strá­že pre­zi­den­ta Slo­ven­skej repub­li­ky (mil​.sk).

Ja som v rokoch 1999 – 2000 absol­vo­val základ­nú vojen­skú služ­bu ako člen čest­nej strá­že pre­zi­den­ta SR. Okrem čest­né­ho strá­že­nia sme cho­di­li ​“vítať” rôz­nych štát­ni­kov, dip­lo­ma­tov, sta­va­li sa špa­lie­re. Mož­no, tí kto­rí vedia akú úlo­hu zvy­kol mať pisár na ​“voj­ne”, tak si vedia pred­sta­viť, čo to asi pre mňa zna­me­na­lo. Okrem iné­ho sme bež­ne pou­ží­va­li vyjad­re­nia typu: ide­me posta­viť plné poc­ty, štát­nu akciu, potre­bu­jem 30 voja­kov poži­čať z dru­hej roty, od vlád­nych čest­ňá­kov :-). Počas svoj­ho roč­né­ho poby­tu som dva­krát mohol prí­sť v uni­for­me Čest­nej strá­že domov. Par­krát som v takej­to sláv­nost­nej uni­for­me bol v his­to­ric­kej budo­ve Slo­ven­ské­ho národ­né­ho divad­la v pre­zi­dent­skej lóži. Musím pove­dať, že to malo šmrnc. Raz som mal na sebe aj his­to­ric­kú uni­for­mu, aká je tu – mil​.sk. Bola mimo­riad­ne pohodl­ná. Pokiaľ viem, časom sa zača­la pou­ží­vať ove­ľa viac (Peter Kaclík).

The pri­ma­ry role of the Honor Guard is to repre­sent the Pre­si­dent of the Slo­vak Repub­lic, the Armed For­ces of the Slo­vak Repub­lic, and the coun­try itself. They per­form the hono­rab­le guar­ding of the Pre­si­den­t’s resi­den­ce and guests at the Pre­si­den­t’s resi­den­ce. Mili­ta­ry honors, espe­cial­ly during offi­cial visits by repre­sen­ta­ti­ves of other sta­tes, are also part of the­ir duties. In times of war, a sta­te of war, a sta­te of emer­gen­cy, or a sta­te of emer­gen­cy, they ful­fill the tasks of pro­tec­ting the Pre­si­dent (mil​.sk). Honor guar­ding takes pla­ce throug­hout the Pre­si­den­t’s pre­sen­ce in the Pre­si­den­tial Pala­ce, usu­al­ly on week­da­ys from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Guard chan­ges occur eve­ry 60 minu­tes, eve­ry full hour. The guard-​changing cere­mo­ny takes pla­ce on week­da­ys at 12:00 p.m. (pre​si​dent​.sk). Honor Guard offi­cers are armed with a 985 mm long saber. The bla­de is made of stain­less ste­el, and the scab­bard is made of spru­ce wood cove­red with leat­her. On spe­cial occa­si­ons, the unit is equ­ip­ped with a flin­tlock rif­le with a bar­rel length of 1080 mm. The unit also uses a semi-​automatic rif­le model 52 and a rif­le model ⁵²⁄₅₇, both of Cze­cho­slo­vak pro­duc­ti­on (mil​.sk).

The Honor Guard unit was first estab­lis­hed at the end of 1968. After the estab­lish­ment of the Slo­vak Repub­lic, the Guard Bat­ta­li­on was reor­ga­ni­zed into the Cast­le and Honor Guard Regi­ment. It had two bat­ta­li­ons, one ful­fil­ling tasks for the Pre­si­dent of the Slo­vak Repub­lic and the other for other cons­ti­tu­ti­onal offi­cials and the hig­hest mili­ta­ry repre­sen­ta­ti­ves. The loca­ti­ons for honor guar­ding were Bra­ti­sla­va Cast­le, the Pri­ma­te­’s Pala­ce, and sin­ce Sep­tem­ber 30, 1996, the Gras­sal­ko­vich Pala­ce (Pre­si­den­tial). On August 1, 2001, the inde­pen­dent unit of the Honor Guard of the Pre­si­dent of the Slo­vak Repub­lic was estab­lis­hed (mil​.sk).

I ser­ved in the Honor Guard of the Pre­si­dent of the Slo­vak Repub­lic during my basic mili­ta­ry ser­vi­ce from 1999 to 2000. In addi­ti­on to honor guar­ding, we would ​“wel­co­me” vari­ous sta­tes­men and dip­lo­mats, for­ming cere­mo­nial lines. For tho­se fami­liar with the role a clerk typi­cal­ly has in the mili­ta­ry, they can pro­bab­ly ima­gi­ne what this meant for me. Among other things, we com­mon­ly used phra­ses like ​“let’s per­form full honors,” ​“sta­te event,” or ​“I need to bor­row 30 sol­diers from the second com­pa­ny, from the govern­ment honor guards :-).” During my one-​year stay, I had the oppor­tu­ni­ty to come home twi­ce in the Honor Guard uni­form. On a few occa­si­ons, I wore this cere­mo­nial uni­form in the his­to­ri­cal buil­ding of the Slo­vak Nati­onal The­at­re in the pre­si­den­tial box. I must say it had a cer­tain charm. Once, I even wore a his­to­ri­cal uni­form like the one depic­ted here. It was excep­ti­onal­ly com­for­tab­le. As far as I know, over time, it beca­me much more wide­ly used (Peter Kaclík).
