Grindal – skvelé krmivo pre ryby

Hits: 17823

Tým urýchlime prijatie grindalu do molitanu. A to nejaký čas trvá. Záleží to na skúsenosti a množstve už zabehnutých kultúr. Týždeň, dva, niekedy aj mesiac. Do misky vložíme molitan a naň dáme zo začiatku mierne namočenú polovičku detskej piškóty.

Vtedy ho treba vyhodiť a použiť nový.

Grindal – Enchytraeus buchholtzi is related to the rupicids Enchytraeus albidus but is smaller. It occurs in South America. E. buchholtzi was accidentally imported in the humus of imported tropical plants. Its name comes from the Swedish aquarist Nancy Grindal, who first used it as fish food in 1950. In nature, it feeds on decaying plant remains (Tomanec). Ideal for breeding are shallow dishes with a larger bottom content, such as lunch dishes. You can get them at stationery stores. Place moistened foam rubber on the bottom. If you want to use new foam rubber, wash it first. You can wash it in aquarium water, which you pour into a bucket, for example. Alternatively, before using the foam rubber, leave it in such water for several days. This speeds up the acceptance of grindal into the foam rubber. You can even dirty” new foam rubber in water that you used to clean foam rubber from the aquarium. Sometimes I also use aquarium foam rubber, which has both advantages and disadvantages. Grindal is fed exclusively with small baby biscuits. Generally, it can be said that when starting a new culture of grindal, you win only after it has settled in. And that takes some time. It depends on experience and the number of established cultures. A week, two, sometimes a month. Place the foam rubber in the dish and put a slightly moistened half of a baby biscuit on it at first. Ideally, place a glass from an older culture with grindal clumps on it. When you eventually notice that the grindal from the glass has disappeared and there is still not enough in the foam rubber, take a glass from another culture and use it for the new culture. At first, I recommend using a smaller amount of the biscuit. Over time, I divide one biscuit into one grindal box, occasionally more. Sometimes, if the culture is very wet, I feed dry biscuits. However, there is a higher risk of mold, so approach this gradually. Place a glass plate on the foam rubber. It can be thicker or thinner; it doesn’t matter. Glass serves as a practical material for feeding grindal. Cover the entire container. Grindal is a soil organism, so it’s understandable that it doesn’t like light. If we have it closed with an opaque lid, we can keep it on the table. Quietly on the shelf or in a closed cabinet. The foam rubber should be 10 mm to 30 mm. Thinner ones are pointless – they soak up very easily, and thicker ones are prone to settling, with liquid components descending to the bottom, which is not suitable. If the biscuit is not consumed in time, it is subject to mold growth. Especially in summer when it is warmer. However, nothing terrible happens; remove the mold or the entire biscuit. On average, a normal culture in a lunch” container consumes about 34 of a baby biscuit a day. Most of the grindal in a running culture is in the foam rubber. If grindal suddenly stops reproducing or individual worms are small, the foam rubber is probably too wet. You can safely take out the foam rubber and rinse it under running water in the sink. When rinsing, there is no need to fear a significant loss of grindal; some grindal always remains in the foam rubber. Alternatively, you can leave the dish open for a day or two. This is advisable even when the foam rubber is quite dark – which means it is either too wet or too dirty. If you rinse the foam rubber, wash the dish and glass as well. It is bad if the foam rubber is very saturated with water or biscuit waste,” and there is a possible increase in temperature, grindal can easily escape from the foam rubber – onto the sides of the dish and even the lid. If we don’t intervene promptly, the grindal will suffocate. If that happens, it’s the end of the grindal, and it has its own smell ;-). The optimal breeding temperature is 2530°C; below 20°C, reproduction ceases. Grindal prefers a higher temperature, but 30°C is already risky. Over time, the foam rubber can radically change its consistency; it gets old. This is normal; over time, the foam rubber literally falls apart. In that case, throw it away and use new foam rubber. An old bed is ideal. Grindal requires care. More than fish.

Maintenance” is necessary at least once every three days. Roughly ten days is the period after which unprovoked grindal dies. If a culture of grindal is not thriving, I proceed by exchanging the glass plate for one with healthy grindal clumps. So I proceed as in the case of starting. Grindal is also suitable for freezing, but I have not seen it offered in this form. However, I occasionally freeze grindal when I don’t have fish to feed. From my own experience, I can say that grindal is not fatty food. Even the nutritional values I found indicate that grindal is roughly on the level of micro-worms or white worms. Sometimes, especially if the foam rubber dries out a bit, mites can appear on it. Small white, scurrying creatures are relatively clearly visible even to the naked eye. They hinder the development of grindal and can completely destroy it with massive reproduction. In that case, I use the contact insecticide Frontline, which I spray on it. It works immediately. Grindal doesn’t smell much, but it doesn’t kill it, and I haven’t noticed any adverse effects on fish. Grindal fully recovers from Frontline in a short time. Of course, we can help it by moving grindal from another culture. Feeding grindal is very simple; just take the entire plate and immerse it in the tank. The biscuit tends not to detach from the glass; it sticks nicely to it. If it does fall off, it’s usually not a big deal, and the fish usually eat it with gusto. If we don’t like it, for example, if we have small fish and the piece of biscuit is large, then we have to remove it.

Grindal can be wiped off with a brush or finger and fed this way. Grindal reproduces quite well. What is on the glass – on the biscuit in the running culture – is only part of the population that went to feed. Most of the worms are in the foam rubber, in the substrate. There is no need to fear that all of it will float away when immersed in water. Grindal is excellent food. Its productivity allows for daily feeding. It has almost no smell, handling it is practical, its size is suitable even for small fish, and larger ones accept it too. The advantage is that grindal can survive in an aquarium for two days (Tomanec). I have been using it since around 2004, and I have never lost it. I have it in about 30 boxes on average. I threw away grindal foam rubber about four times in the whole time, of which I think twice because some flies settled there, which were nice and big, the fish ate them, but it started to look like massive reproduction. Foam rubber broke twice for me. Occasionally, a box or lid broke. Grindal mites never destroyed any grindal culture for me, not even a single one. When I used to keep fruit flies, they sometimes tried to settle on grindal. With the amounts in which I kept grindal, fruit flies, and mites, there is nothing surprising about that. There are, of course, several methods of grindal breeding. For example, someone might cut out a small part of the foam rubber in the middle to streamline breeding and its removal. Someone breeds grindal on clay and feeds it with cornmeal or oat flakes. Or on coconut, sisal fibers, or filter wool (Tomanec). Oat flakes provide a higher chance of mites. According to some sources, it is recommended to breed them in boiled peat, which is fed with oat flakes.
