Flóra Oravy

Hits: 2078

Región Oravy patrí medzi chladné oblasti Slovenska. Iba dolina rieky Orava patrí do mierne teplej oblasti. Vodná nádrž Orava spôsobila zmenu pôvodných lúčnych spoločenstiev. V lesoch má zastúpenie smrek, jedľa, buk, borovica, smrekovec. Smrekové monokultúry tvoria väčšinu. Rozšírená je borievka obyčajná (sorger.sk). Je tu zastúpený stupeň pahorkatín, podhorský, horský až subalpínsky. V nižších polohách prevažujú listnaté lesy. Vyskytuje sa tu aj jelša, breza, lieska. Floristicky najzaujímavejšie sú rašeliniská Hornej Oravy – Klinské rašelinisko, a rašelinisko na Suchej Hore (orava.sk). Klinské rašelinisko, zásobované len zrážkami, je Národnou prírodnou rezerváciou, predstavuje najviac vyvinuté vrchoviskové rašelinisko nelesného typu na Slovensku (orava-region.sk).

The Orava region is situated among the colder areas of Slovakia. Only the valley of the Orava River belongs to a moderately warm zone. The Orava Reservoir has caused a change in the original meadow communities. The forests are characterized by the presence of spruce, fir, beech, pine, and spruce-fir. Spruce monocultures make up the majority. The common juniper is widespread (sorger.sk). The region encompasses hills, submountainous, mountainous, and subalpine terrain. In lower elevations, deciduous forests prevail, including alder, birch, and hazel. Notably, the peat bogs of Upper Orava – Klinské peat bog and the peat bog on Suchá Hora are floristically interesting (orava.sk). Klinské peat bog, supplied only by precipitation, is a National Nature Reserve and represents the most developed non-forest mountain peat bog in Slovakia (orava-region.sk).

Dych zimy v Považskom Inovci

Hits: 2832

Autor: Kornel Duffek

V prípade Považského Inovca však stačí prejsť Krajinský most a už môžete stúpať priamo do hôr.

When you ask someone from Piešťany which mountains they consider their own, most often they will tell you Považský Inovec. While the Small Carpathians also have their charm, they are a bit farther away. In the case of Považský Inovec, however, you just need to cross the Krajinský bridge, and you can start ascending right into the mountains. And these are not just any mountains — they are infused with history. You can find almost all cultural layers here, from prehistoric hunters to the ancient Slavs. There is a large concentration of Romanesque rotundas, perhaps the largest in Slovakia, and the remnants of medieval castles. And that’s not to mention the beautiful natural scenery and karst caves like Čertova pec.

Považský Inovec is attractive and interesting not only in full bloom but in every season, including winter. At the time when mists and frosts fall on the landscape, and drivers begin to complain about risky weather, something magical happens in the mountains — every tree, branch, stem, dry leaf, or needle is covered in white crystals. It’s the breath of winter, which usually doesn’t last long. Therefore, you have to intensely watch this nature play to not miss any detail. The most beautiful view of the delicate frost occurs when the sun shines. However, it often happens that the sun shines too intensely, and then the white crystals begin to fall and disappear, suddenly ending the performance. Luckily, you have a camera with you to capture at least a fraction of what you saw. At home on the computer screen, you realize that it was not just a prelude but a reality. And then, you might reflect on the playfulness and variability of nature.

It is a great advantage for any town to have its river or mountains. Piešťany has both. The Váh River and Považský Inovec. And even a little extra — thermal healing springs.

Beckovský hrad

Hits: 4172

Beckov postavili v polovici 13. storočia na mieste neskorogotického sídliska a veľkomoravského hradiska9. storočia (Zdroj: Informačná tabuľa).

Za čias Veľkej Moravy tu stála pevnosť, ktorú neskôr vystriedalo župné sídlo a začiatkom 13. storočia hrad s podhradím a s kostolom zasväteným sv.

Prekrásny hrad postavil a pomenoval ho podľa svojho dvorného blázna – Beckovom.

Presne v tom čase hradného pána uštipla do oka vretenica a on slepý spadol do priepasti (valka.cz).

Beckov Castle was built in the mid-13th century on the site of a later Gothic settlement and a Great Moravian fortress from the 9th century (Source: Information board). It stands on a 70-meter-high cliff (pamiatky.net). It is mentioned in the Chronicle of Anonymus from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries (pramen.info), under the name Blundus (bathory.sk). It belonged to the defensive system of castles even in the times of Great Moravia (Wikipedia). In the late 13th century, it belonged to Matúš Čák of Trenčín, who had it rebuilt. In 1388, it came into the hands of the Ctibor family, who, among other things, built a Gothic chapel and a cistern, transforming it from a guard castle into a representative noble residence. The fortified castle served as a refuge against the Turks. A fire in 1729 led to the abandonment of the castle. The Beckov Castle limestone hardpan was formed by selective erosion and denudation of the Váh river basin at the contact with the Považský Inovec overlay series. Given the gently modeled surrounding relief, it appears monumental. At the foot of the castle slope is a Jewish cemetery from 17391785 (Source: Information board). Beckov Castle is one of the most beautiful castles I have ever seen. It is a national cultural monument.

Archaeological research has documented settlement in the castle area and its surroundings in the La Tène and Roman periods (1st century BC). During the time of Great Moravia, there was a fortress here, later replaced by a county seat, and at the beginning of the 13th century, a castle with a bailey and a church dedicated to St. Stephen. The oldest written records from 1208 and 1226 mention the village of Blundix, likely located below the royal castle. The castle – castrum Bolonduch appears in written sources only after 1264 (Kodoňová M., 1998: Beckov, Beckov Municipal Office). Other historical names for Beckov include Blundus, Bolondoc (Ondrejka Jozef, 1966: Beckov, Tematín, Western Slovak Publishing Center in Bratislava), Blundix, Blonduch, Blondich, Bolonduch, Galancz sive Beczkow (voltek.cz). The importance of Beckov Castle and the subcastle settlement became more pronounced during the conquest of Slovak territories by the ancient Hungarians when it turned out that the fortress was one of the few strongholds that the newcomers had to fight hard for (Kodoňová, 1997).

Stibor had a chapel built on the castle, and its entrance portal had a tympanum with the Stibor family coat of arms. It is historically the first use of a secular motif on a sacred building. On its altar was a 180 cm tall Gothic sculpture of the Madonna, which, in its craftsmanship, rivaled the most beautiful ones in Europe. Today, it is in Koryčany near Moravia, where it is known as the miraculous and healing Black Madonna (obroda.sk).

The legend of Becko tells that Becko was the court jester of Duke Ctibor during the reign of King Sigismund. He entertained his lord and his guests so well that Ctibor promised to fulfill any wish Becko might have. Becko, jokingly, pointed to a nearby steep rock and asked Ctibor to build a castle on it within a year and a day. To everyone’s surprise, Ctibor built a beautiful castle, naming it Beckov after his court jester. Ctibor supposedly bought it from Becko for as much gold as Becko weighed (blogspot.sk).

Another legend says that Stibor, as the castle lord, threw a servant off a cliff because the servant, in protecting his child, killed Stibor’s favorite dog. The servant, falling from the cliff, shouted that they would meet again within a year and a day. Exactly at that time, the castle lord was stung in the eye by a gadfly, and he fell blind into the abyss (valka.cz).

Salamandrové slávnosti v Banskej Štiavnici

Hits: 4485

In Banská Štiavnica, the annual celebration of the city, known as Salamander Days, takes place. In 2009, I was present during the last day of this event. I witnessed various activities, including a children’s theater, a fair-like event, and several musical performances. The photos feature folk music from the Hungarian town of Sopron, with which Banská Štiavnica has a longstanding partnership. They delighted me with their cheerfulness. There was also a part of the fair where Sopron was presented. Later, the Czech group Terne Čhave caught my attention.

Originally, the Salamander was a festive procession of students from the Banská Štiavnica Academy. It always took place after dusk, illuminated by miner’s lamps and torches. After 1919, when the Mining and Forestry University moved to Sopron, the rich social life ceased. It was revived after 1935. After World War II, the tradition of Salamander processions was restored on September 10, 1949. However, until 1993, it only occurred eight times. Since 1993, it has been held annually in the second week of September. The name is derived from the movement of the spotted salamander. Mimicking its movement, the procession crosses the street, creating a captivating theater with period lighting. The parade includes 580 figures, mainly depicting the work and life of the city’s inhabitants. The procession moves slowly and gracefully, undulating from one side of the street to the other (banskastiavnica.sk).

Carnuntum v Petronelli

Hits: 2664

Chránil ho systém priekop a ochranný múr s rohovými a dvojitými vežami.

In Petronell, near Bratislava, there is a Roman camp located in Austria that is a remnant and reconstruction of the actual Roman camp Carnuntum. The Roman metropolis Carnuntum was situated on the Amber Road, along the Roman border – Limes Romanus between Vienna and Bratislava, at the intersection of trade routes, the Amber Road, and the Danube route. It is the largest archaeological site in Austria (vinokarpat.sk). Systematic excavations have been ongoing since 1885. The word Carnuntum” is likely derived from Kar” or Karn” – stone or pile of rocks (Wikipedia.cs).

Carnuntum evolved from the 1st half of the 1st century AD until the end of Roman presence in 433. The estimated population of Carnuntum is around 50,000. Before the Romans, Celts inhabited this area, followed by the Boii tribe in the 2nd century BC. In 6 BC, the Roman Tiberius founded a military base on the territory of the Celtic city Carnuntum, attacking the Marcomannic king Maroboduus. In 8 – 9 AD, Pannonia became a Roman province as Inferior Provincia Illyricum. After the defeat in the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD), Augustus decided to abandon further conquests north of the Danube, designating the Danube as the empire’s boundary. In the following period, Carnuntum had a crucial defensive function on the Danube. Under Emperor Claudius (4154), a civilian town was also established. In 172 – 175, Marcus Aurelius fought against the Marcomanni and Quadi in Pannonia, staying in Carnuntum from 171 to 173. In 194, Carnuntum was elevated to a colony and received the name Colonia Septimia Aurelia Antoniniana Carnuntum (vinokarpat.sk).

About a kilometer west of present-day Bad Deutsch Altenburg, the 15th legion – Legio XV Apollinaris had a military camp. It was protected by a trench system and a defensive wall with corner and double towers, housing 5,000 to 6,000 soldiers. About a kilometer west of the military camp was the auxiliary legion camp – Castrum auxilii, built in the 2nd half of the 1st century and served a 500-member cavalry military garrison. Around the military camp, a settlement with solid wooden structures (canabae) was established, transforming into stone buildings during the 2nd century AD. Civilian population settled here, and this settlement spread over approximately 150 hectares. Emperor Hadrian granted urban rights to this urban settlement. Carnuntum gradually transformed into a significant trade metropolis (vinokarpat.sk).

The amphitheater in Petronell, with an area of 7244 meters, was one of the largest in the Roman Empire. However, only 8,000 spectators could fit into the arena, and the tribune gives an idea of the original height of the structure. It is assumed that the southern tribune had a two-story and elegantly furnished lodge for the governor. There was one monumental gate on the east and west sides each, and at the western entrance, there was the Nemeseum – a small sanctuary dedicated to the goddess of fate and revenge, Diana Nemesis (Information board).

Jahrh

underts n. Chr. in Steinbauten umwandelten.
