Úprava vody

Hits: 36009

When treating water, caution is necessary. Knowledge of chemistry is useful. It is necessary to realize that without responsibility towards living organisms, it is not ethical to approach experiments with changes in water parameters. It is useful to familiarize oneself with the parameters of water. Qualitatively, all changes can be made by mixing with water of different properties. Monitoring water parameters, adjusting hardness, and pH are often overemphasized. Fish bred for generations in captivity are often adapted to our conditions. It is not paramount for fish and plants to live in water with the same pH and hardness as they do in nature, but to meet as many conditions as possible for their successful development. Do not get lost in constant measurements and attempts to change. For regular aquarium practice, water parameters are overrated.

Pomôže staršia mraznička, chladiarenský prístroj a šikovný majster.

Raising the water temperature with a heater is quite common in various areas, not just in aquariums. However, a far more challenging problem is how to cool the water. This question is primarily addressed by aquarists dealing with the breeding of marine organisms. Here, the option to utilize the principle of Peltier cells presents itself. An old freezer, refrigeration device, and a skilled craftsman can help. The second option is purchasing from a store. Cooling water in this way is financially demanding. On a small scale, ice can be used, but it is dangerous – because melting ice requires a lot of energy. Ice is a solid substance and has a high thermal capacity – it requires more energy to transition to a liquid state for the same temperature change. Let’s proceed cautiously so we don’t have to experience temperature extremes.

Varom vyzrážame len uhličitanovú tvrdosť a to maximálne o 2.7 °dKH. Anacharis densa a živočíchov, najmä ulitníkov a lastúrnikov znižujú obsah Ca a Mg vo vode.

If we want to change the water hardness, with common inexpensive means, we can only increase it. We can increase the content of calcium and magnesium with calcium carbonate – CaCO3, magnesium carbonate – MgCO3, calcium sulfate – CaSO4, magnesium sulfate – MgSO4, calcium chloride – CaCl2. Naturally, for example, with limestone. However, if we want to achieve a quick change, we must use a stronger concentration. Finally, effective commercial products are available that can quickly increase hardness. However, a much more difficult question arises if we intend to decrease the hardness. It is possible to use precipitation with oxalic acid, but the equilibrium of this process is small. However, if we were able to filter this water mechanically with a very fine filter, we might achieve the desired result. Boiling water to reduce hardness is very uneconomical. The effect is minimal. Boiling only precipitates carbonate hardness, up to a maximum of 2.7 °dKH. In addition, boiling also destroys the little life that is in the water, so I do not recommend boiling. Activated charcoal partially reduces water hardness, similarly some types of plants such as Anacharis densa and animals, especially snails and crustaceans, reduce the content of Ca and Mg in the water. They are able to accumulate large amounts of calcium in their shells, as they are practically dependent on its occurrence. Ampullaria are able to bind a relatively large amount of calcium into their shells in larger quantities. Conversely, in its absence, their shells soften. Peat also reduces water hardness to a small extent. Mixing softer water is of course possible to achieve lower hardness, and it works linearly. For practical purposes, we have the following options in principle.

Distillation – In the distillation column, water is stripped of ions. Distillation generates a significant amount of wastewater. The use of large volumes of water is necessary because distillation involves high temperatures that need to be cooled. The distillation column is a considerable investment, used by breeders who have a larger number of tanks. The efficiency of distillation is very high. However, it must be said that distilled water is not very suitable for aquarium purposes. It is sterile water and very labile. Therefore, it is good to mix this water. Reverse osmosis is ideal for this reason. Technical distilled water from the store is not very suitable for aquarists. The operation of the distillation column itself does not undergo any significant wear and tear, and in any case, under normal use, it does not require high subsequent investments.

Oproti destilačnej sústave majú jednu veľkú nevýhodu v trvanlivosti – membrány a filtračné média osmotickej kolóny je nutné časom meniť, pretože inak reverzka prestane plniť svoju funkciu.

Reverse osmosis – a process that utilizes semipermeability. Osmosis is a known process in which the exchange of substances occurs due to osmotic pressure assuming semipermeability between two systems. For clarification – simple diffusion, mixing cannot occur because there is a boundary, an obstacle between two systems. But due to the fact that this boundary is semipermeable, thanks to osmotic pressure, the flow of substances occurs. Reverse osmosis also utilizes this, but with the difference that in reverse osmosis, ions are completely removed, there is no equalization of osmotic pressure on both sides. The water obtained in this way is suitable for aquarists. Finally, its efficiency is not as high as in distillation. Water from a reverse osmosis system typically reaches 110% of the original conductivity value. There are commercially available reverse osmosis units on the market that can be purchased. They do not take up as much space as distillation systems. However, compared to distillation systems, they have one major disadvantage in terms of durability – membranes and filtration media of the reverse osmosis unit need to be replaced over time because otherwise, the reverse osmosis system will fail to function properly.

Iontomeničom (Ionexom) – elektrolytická úprava cez katexanex, z ktorých jeden je záporne nabitý a priťahuje katióny a druhý kladne a priťahuje anióny.

Ion exchange (Ionex) – electrolytic treatment via a cathex and anex, one of which is negatively charged and attracts cations, and the other is positively charged and attracts anions. Water passes through these two main parts, and ions are bound to the individual parts. This achieves demineralization from ions. Ionex could also be easily assembled amateurishly. The problem is that cathex and anex have their capacity. Over time, it must be regenerated to maintain its physical properties and the entire system to be effective. Regeneration is carried out by the action of various specific substances, in some cases, kitchen salt. As an ion exchange (changer) for calcium, permutit, wofatit, and cabunit are used, for example. Selective ion exchangers are designed to eliminate certain elements – components in water. For nitrogen – N, monmorillonite, and clinoptiolite are suitable.

Reduction of conductivity is achieved by the same methods as described for water hardness. Similarly, increasing conductivity. The source water available to us typically has a slightly alkaline pH, with drinking tap water usually around 7.5. For many fish, it is suitable to increase the acidity to values around 6.5. We have several options – either change the pH purely chemically or more naturally. pH change is more effective when water contains fewer dissolved substances. If it contains a lot of salts, the pH change will be somewhat smaller, and any fluctuations in this value will be smaller. The effect of NaCl – salt on the pH of water is negligible for the aquarist because it is a salt of a strong base – NaOH and a strong acid – HCl, so it does not affect the pH. Practically, NaCl affects pH only because aquarium water is a solution containing various substances with which NaCl reacts. However, this effect is small and difficult to predict.

Ak by sme predsa len použili silné kyseliny: 2HCl + Ca(HCO3)2 = CaCl2 + 2H2CO3 – reakciou kyseliny chlorovodíkovej (soľnej) vzniká chlorid vápenatý.

For reducing pH, it is suitable to use weak phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄). H₃PO₄ is a weak acid. The amount necessary should be determined by experimentation. The pH change by any means also depends on the salt content, partially on temperature, and pressure. It can be roughly estimated that to lower the pH in a 100-liter tank, H₃PO₄ should be applied in milliliters. I do not recommend using other acids; however, for your safety, it should also be a weak acid of simple composition. H₃PO₄ is commonly used to reduce hardness. When using H₃PO₄, the following reactions occur (in the listed reactions, calcium Ca can be replaced with magnesium Mg):

2H₃PO₄ + 3Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca₃(PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – acid reacts with calcium bicarbonate to form soluble calcium phosphate and weak carbonic acid. H₂CO₃ is unstable and can break down into water and carbon dioxide. The resulting phosphate can be fertilizer for fish, algae, or a source of phosphorus for fish.

2H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – soluble dihydrogen phosphate calcium is formed.

H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaHPO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – insoluble calcium hydrogen phosphate is formed.

If we were to use strong acids:

2HCl + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaCl₂ + 2H₂CO₃ – reaction of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) forms calcium chloride.

H₂SO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaSO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – reaction of sulfuric acid forms calcium sulfate.

If the source water contains limestone, the water’s buffering capacity will be evident – calcium carbonate CaCO₃ reacts with the resulting carbonic acid to form bicarbonate, entering the carbonic acid cycle. In this way, our options to influence pH are limited. pH will decrease for a certain time, but not for long; this mainly depends on the concentration of bicarbonates (from CO₂) and the amount of acid used – it’s obvious that the buffering capacity has its limits. In the case of high water hardness, continuous CO₂ treatment is more effective.

2H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – lösliches Dihydrogenphosphatcalcium entsteht.

H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaHPO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – unlösliches Calciumdihydrogenphosphat entsteht.

Naturally, pH can also be lowered. Suitable options include alder cones, decaying wood, peat, peat extract, etc. However, everything depends on understanding the specific requirements of individual fish and plants. Some fish do not tolerate peat extract. Peat extract is often used for dips, for example, for tetra fish. Peat reduces pH. Decaying wood has its drawbacks. However, it can generally be said, especially for beginning aquarists, that using various materials in the aquarium is not as dangerous as most people think. On the contrary, their long-term and gradual activity makes their effect on pH change much more acceptable than using pure chemicals. Moreover, the nature of the acids leached from these materials often has a beneficial effect on fish health and plant growth. Humic acids, organic complexes, chelates, and other organic substances that are often a natural part of our fish and plants, even in their native habitats, play a role in this process.

To increase pH, baking soda – NaHCO3 is used. However, when it comes to raising pH, this purely chemical method is used to a much lesser extent. Naturally, pH can be best increased by using a substrate. Carbonates contained in limestone, travertine commonly shift pH valuesto levels above 8. A very simple water adjustment is the use of salt. If we want to achieve a constant level of salt, do not forget to add salt during water changes and top-ups. Salt is used for some types of fish, especially for brackish species. Brackish species live in nature at the intersection of fresh and saltwater, for example, at the mouths of large rivers into the sea. Salt is also recommended for some livebearers. Livebearers live in waters of moderate hardness in South and North America. The appropriate dosage for guppies is 2 – 3 tablespoons of salt per 40 liters of water. For black mollies – a typical brackish species – even a little more, 5 tablespoons per 40 liters of water. We can use both table and sea salt, which can be obtained in stores. When starting with salt application, let’s be cautious at first, proceed carefully, and let the fish gradually get used to the salt, as osmotic pressure is tricky. A sudden change in conductivity caused by a sudden increase in NaCl will lead to negative stress – especially the surface – the fish’s skin is susceptible to damage. This property is utilized in treatment.

Salt is recommended for African lake cichlids. They contain relatively high concentrations of sodium – Na. In literature, up to 0.5 kg per 100 liters of water is mentioned, but I recommend one tablespoon per 40 liters of water. Salt appears to act as a transporter of metabolic processes and a catalyst. NaCl dissociates first into sodium cation and chlorine anion. Chlorine acts as a disinfectant, and sodium participates in biological reactions. Organic dyes, drugs can be successfully removed by activated carbon, partially by peat. Activated carbon has a wide range of applications. It is a relatively effective prevention against infection because it adsorbs a lot of harmful substances. It works as a filter. It has such a structure that it has a huge surface area, one mm3 provides up to 100150 m² of area. It is also used in commercially available filters. It can also partially reduce water hardness. However, it should be realized that its action is undesirable, especially in tanks with plants, due to its adsorption capacity. Activated carbon also removes nutrients from plants. Of course, its capabilities are exhaustible – after some time, the capacity becomes saturated, and it is necessary to either regenerate or replace the activated carbon. Regeneration is a chemical process, too costly for the aquarist, actually unnecessary. Activated carbon could be partially regenerated by boiling, but this is quite impractical. If we have powdered activated carbon available, we have won – its efficiency is practically the highest, and therefore we can use the smallest volume. The solution is to implement it into the filter, but also for example, to pour it into a stocking and place it in the tank. If some of it disperses, do not despair, activated carbon is harmless, it does not cloud the water.

In the water from the municipal water supply, various gaseous components are present, primarily intended for disinfection. They are essential for humans, but their impact on aquarium life is undesirable. One of these gases is chlorine, which is a well-known toxic gas, even for humans, but in low doses, it is harmless to humans and kills bacteria. Drinking water usually contains chlorine in the range of 0.10.2 mg/l, with a maximum of up to 0.5 mg/l. Chlorine is particularly harmful to fish gills. To rid water of chlorine, for example, letting it stand is suitable. There are products on the market based on sodium thiosulfate – Na2S2O3, which can remove chlorine from water. Allowing water to stand will rid it of chlorine in approximately one day. We just need to allow gases to escape – so no closed containers. Partially, immediate water filling will help, with the longest possible transport of water in the hose. A significant portion of chlorine will evaporate this way. There are also other gases in the water – complete degassing by standing occurs after four days. Various infusions are used for the swabs of some species, such as infusions of aquatic plants. These can literally prepare water – stabilize it, provide desired substances, such as trace elements, or possibly bind more harmful components. Wood is also used, oak, alder, willow. Brown coal is also suitable. Peat acts as a partial adsorbent. On the other hand, it adds humic acids and other organic substances to the water. Especially recently, ultraviolet light has been used for water treatment. Often also for its sterilization from pathogens. It can also be used in such a way – when the entire volume of water is affected – for example, in the case of an acute disease, but usually, the UV lamp is used as a filter, which effectively rids the water of various organism pathogens. Water treated with a sufficiently strong UV lamp, for example, does not become cloudy. Its use minimizes microbial infections. UV lamps are readily available on the market for aquarium supplies. As for a strong lamp – the wattage is determined by the volume of the tank. I do not recommend using the UV lamp continuously.

Vzduchovanie a kyslík vo vode

Hits: 35485

Oxygen is a gas that we associate with life in our minds. Plants are the primary source of oxygen. There is much less oxygen in water than in the air. The concentration of oxygen in water depends on the water temperature. The higher the temperature in the aquarium, the lower the concentration of O2. At a temperature of 10°C at normal pressure, there are about 11.3 mg of O2 dissolved in a liter of water, at a temperature of 25°C – 8.3 mg/l, and at 30°C – 7.6 mg/l. Oxygen enters the water not only through the action of aquatic plants but also through diffusion from the air, mixing, and surface agitation. Oxygen is mainly consumed in the aquarium by the decomposition activity of microorganisms in the substrate. If the substrate is poorly aerated, this can lead to a deficiency and depletion of oxygen for fish and plants. Oxygen promotes the breakdown of matter. Pure, 100% concentrated oxygen is toxic to the human body, so when I talk about oxygen in the context of aeration, I’m referring, of course, to air. Air also contains a lot of nitrogen and CO2. Plants don’t like” oxygen all that much, especially not during the day and with sufficient supply of light energy. Even though aeration causes significant water movement, it is not beneficial for plants. On the contrary, oxygen would be welcome for them during the night when plants absorb oxygen. During the day, plants absorb carbon dioxide – this is the process of photosynthesis and the resulting processes such as the Krebs cycle, the C cycle, N cycle, etc. Aeration homogenizes the water in the aquarium, provides water movement, and mixes individual layers, especially vertically. The amount of oxygen that aeration can deliver to the aquarium is relatively low – the diffusion of gases in water is orders of magnitude lower than in air. It is pointless to create large bubbles; although they may agitate the water more, the amount of oxygen absorbed by the water will be lower than if we produced smaller bubbles. The amount of oxygen absorbed in this way depends on the surface area of the bubbles, which is higher with smaller bubbles.

An airstone can have various shapes. It can be cylindrical, spherical, or elongated, up to 105 cm long. There are stones shaped like the circumference of a circle. Similarly to an airstone, a wood diffuser can be used, which creates small bubbles. Its disadvantage is that the pores in it close quickly. It is used more for CO2 diffusion – for plant fertilization. Moreover, the wood diffuser decomposes and becomes covered with algae. Another essential way to transport oxygen into the water is surface agitation, which either aerates through the stone or filter. Most filter usage instructions recommend placing the filter so that the water outlet is at or just below the surface. This way, oxygen gets into the water. In aquaristics, air pumps are used for aeration, from which air is driven through tubes either to airstones or filters. I use several types of air pumps of varying power. The air pump should be positioned above all water levels into which it delivers air to prevent water from entering the compressor in the event of a power outage. If it is not possible to place the compressor in this way, the tube on its way from the compressor to the aquarium is first led one meter above the highest water level, or another technical solution is provided to prevent water from entering, for example, I use a check valve. If you ever come across the term turtle,” it might refer to a larger air pump designed for a larger pipe or hose (e.g., garden). It is often used where there are multiple tanks. Another option is to aerate through the filter. Some filters can draw air through a connected tube into the upper part of the filter. I use this method and consider it better and more functional. The tube can be adjusted as needed to provide air as you like. This adapted aeration has a better effect because the bubbles are introduced into the water horizontally and are smaller if needed. Probably also because they have a certain inertia and a small volume, their movement to the surface and therefore evaporation takes much longer than with stone aeration. Gas diffusion into the water is more effective because it takes longer and occurs over a larger surface area.

So gelangt Sauerstoff ins Wasser.

Firma Aqua World, nemecká SERA a česká SERA usporiadala 18.11.2007 odborný seminár spojený s prednáškou Hynka Dařbujána. Seminár sa konal v priestoroch hotela Kotva vo Veľkom Bieli. Bol určený majiteľom, vedúcim predajní a personálu ZOO predajní s pokročilými skúsenosťami a znalosťami. Prekladal Ing. Oldřich Šimeček z českej SERY a Ing. Ján Kolc z firmy AQUA WORLD. Prednášajúcimi boli Dieter Untergasser – vedecký poradca spoločnosti SERA GmbH a Ing. Hynek Dařbuján – odborník na cichlidy a morskú akvaristiku. S týmito témami a v tomto poradí: Dieter Untergasser – Osvedčené riešenia častých problémov vedecky podložené, Hynek Dařbuján – Cesta po jazere Tanganika a novinky medzi cichlidami, Dieter Untergasser – Liečenie, vrátane nových prípravkov, poskytnutie vlastných skúseností z testovania.

Najviac ma zaujali štyri výrobky: Toxivec, Phosvec, Siporax a Protazol.

Seminár zakončil Untergasser školením o liečivách a chorobách.

The company Aqua World, German SERA, and Czech SERA organized a professional seminar with a lecture by Hynek Dařbuján on November 18, 2007. The seminar took place at the Kotva Hotel in Veľký Biel and was aimed at owners, store managers, and experienced ZOO store personnel. Approximately 40 – 50 enthusiasts attended the seminar, which ran from around 10:00 to 17:00. Participants were well taken care of with refreshments, lunch, and translation from German. Translators were Ing. Oldřich Šimeček from Czech SERA and Ing. Ján Kolc from Aqua World. Three members from our club participated – Petrová, Neubauer, and myself.

I would like to share some useful information from the seminar. The speakers were Dieter Untergasser, a scientific advisor to SERA GmbH, and Hynek Dařbuján, an expert on cichlids and marine aquaristics. The topics covered by Dieter Untergasser included proven solutions to common problems scientifically supported, treatment, including new preparations, and sharing personal experiences from testing. Untergasser spoke extensively about the range of products SERA produces, from feeds to medications, extracts, and other water conditioning products. He demonstrated the effects of some products on water treatment, such as Toxivec.”

Four products that caught my attention were Toxivec, Phosvec, Siporax, and Protazol. Toxivec removes harmful substances from water, such as ammonium, nitrates, chlorine, chloramine, heavy metals, and medications. Phosvec is designed to remove phosphates from water, which cause algae growth. Siporax is a highly porous, self-cleaning material suitable for biofilters as a filtration medium. Protazol is a preparation against single-celled skin parasites, such as velvet disease.

Hynek Dařbuján’s lecture was interesting and humorously presented. Through it, we glimpsed into a world very different and exotic from ours. Hynek mentioned that Tanganyika is not the safest region, and he would like to return to this lake. The seminar concluded with Untergasser’s training on medications and diseases, providing detailed information. You can find Mr. Untergasser on the internet under the name fish doctor.”

Ide napríklad o väčšie zásahy do životného prostredia rýb v akváriu. Dôvodov je niekoľko

Stresovanie rýb

Tropheusy sú veľmi citlivé na pôsobenie rôznych stresorov a mnohí chovatelia pripisujú hlavný dôvod vzniku tohto ochorenia práve pôsobeniu stresu. Tým sa znižuje odolnosť rýb voči ochoreniam. Ako stresový faktor sa najčastejšie uplatňuje prevoz rýb, zmena osádky akvária (pridávanie nových jedincov, najmä vlastného druhu a formy), veľká zmena zariadenia akvária, odchyt rýb v akváriu. V podstate všetky ďalšie faktory môžeme označiť za stresory.

Nízky počet jedincov chovnej skupiny

Tropheusy žijú hierarchicky v húfoch a v prípade malého počtu jedincov alebo nedostatku úkrytov dominantný jedinec (väčšinou samec) napáda ostatné ryby svojho druhu a formy.

Niektorí chovatelia pridávajú do vody kuchynskú soľ z dôvodu zvýšenia pH k alkalickému.

Author of the post – Róbert Toman

One of the main reasons for failures in keeping Tropheus is a disease to which all fish usually succumb within a few days. This disease is known as Malawi bloat” or simply bloat,” meaning swollen.” Although it is referred to as Malawi disease, it also affects fish from Lake Victoria and especially Lake Tanganyika. The most sensitive are fish that primarily feed on plant-based food. It is crucial to recognize the first symptoms of the disease and start treatment immediately.

The symptoms of the disease manifest in several stages:

  • Fish spit out food and eventually stop eating altogether.
  • They bend in the sides, enlarge their abdominal cavity (swelling), and thin white feces come out of the anal opening instead of normal brown-black ones.
  • Red spots or ulcers may appear around the anal opening.
  • During these symptoms, there is likely severe damage to the liver, kidneys, and swim bladder.

Fish lose a lot of weight, hide, lie at the bottom, sway, have difficulty breathing, darken, and die within 1 – 2 days.

Causes of the disease:

It is quite surprising how various causes can lead to this severe illness and the death of these beautiful fish. Most commonly, it is due to mistakes made by the keeper, and it’s not just about disease caused by inappropriate feeding (e.g., live food). It includes more significant interventions in the fish’s environment in the aquarium. There are several reasons:

  • Stressing the fish: Tropheus are very sensitive to various stressors, and many keepers attribute the main reason for the onset of this disease to stress. This reduces the fish’s resistance to diseases. The most common stress factor is fish transport, changes in the aquarium population (adding new individuals, especially of the same species and form), significant changes in the aquarium setup, and catching fish in the aquarium. Essentially, all other factors can be considered stressors.
  • Low number of individuals in the breeding group: Tropheus live hierarchically in groups, and in the case of a small number of individuals or a lack of hiding places, the dominant individual (usually a male) attacks other fish of the same species and form.
  • Incorrect feeding: Tropheus are herbivorous fish, so feeding them animal proteins, especially non-warm-blooded animals (meat), is not recommended. The main component of their diet should be high-quality flake food based on algae (Spirulina). They can also be fed plant products such as lettuce, cooked pasta, and the like. As a supplement, they can be fed frozen cyclops or high-quality pellets, shrimp, and brine shrimp, but only to adult fish that are more resistant. Be cautious with this food, or better yet, don’t experiment at all. Herbivorous fish have a long digestive system, corresponding to the longer time needed for food processing. Decomposition of poorly digested or incompletely excreted food in the intestines can cause irritation of the intestinal wall and stress the fish, opening the way for invasive parasites.
  • Overfeeding: It is essential to feed in small portions several times a day to avoid overfeeding the fish at once. Tropheus are very voracious fish, and with enough food, they can gorge themselves to bursting.” Fish, especially after being transferred to another tank, for example, after purchase, are particularly susceptible. At that time, the keeper must be extra cautious and feed very moderately. Feeding more frequently in smaller portions can also eliminate aggression between individuals of the same species/form.
  • Poor water quality: Another crucial factor is water cleanliness. Regular water changes of around 30% of the tank volume every week are necessary, although opinions on the amount and timing of water changes vary. Insufficient oxygenation of the water, leading to low oxygen levels for denitrifying bacteria, also contributes to poor water quality (increased nitrate content).
  • Adding salt: Some keepers add table salt to the water to increase the pH to alkaline levels. However, this does not actually raise the pH, and fish sometimes react very negatively to higher NaCl content.

Disease Agent

At this point, the opinions of hobbyists differ. Some state that it is a disease of bacterial origin, while others claim it is of parasitic origin. Most likely, it is a protozoal parasite that normally resides in the intestines of healthy fish. When the individual is weakened, for example, due to stress, these organisms multiply, blocking the digestive system. This leads to problems with food intake. The parasite enters the body cavity through the intestinal wall, causing swelling” of the abdominal cavity. There is also discussion about the contagiousness of this disease. It is likely a contagious disease because not only one fish gets sick but usually three or more. It might seem that it is the effect of stress on all fish in the aquarium, leading to the illness of all individuals. However, the symptoms do not manifest in all at once but gradually. For example, on the first day, one fish stops eating, on the second day, another stops, and the first one begins to show symptoms of digestive system damage (swelling), and so on.

Treatment

Treatment is possible only in the first stage of the disease. The later treatment begins, the smaller the chance of recovery. If symptoms of the second stage of the disease appear, it is too late. It is usually necessary to treat the entire tank completely; moving fish to a separate tank worsens the disease, and the fish die. However, it is possible to use a quarantine tank. For treatment, hobbyists use various periods of the antibiotic Metronidazole (Entizol, Emtyl, Flagyl, Metryl, Protostat, Satric, Neo-Tric), which is used in human medicine for gynecological problems, or other antibiotics.

Metronidazole Treatment

If symptoms of the first stage of the disease appear, 30% of the water is changed to improve water quality, aeration is increased, and about 50% of the water is changed again. It is recommended to remove all biological filters because medications usually kill denitrifying bacteria. During treatment, lighting is turned off. It is advisable to gradually raise the temperature to 28 – 30 °C while strongly aerating. Increasing the temperature accelerates fish metabolism and boosts their immune system. At the same time, the life cycle of the disease agent is accelerated. Metronidazole is then applied at a dose of 100 mg per 38 liters of water. The dose is repeated every two days as needed until the fish start eating. If the fish survive, they will recover within a week. The medication can also be administered in food if symptoms appear during a time when the fish are still eating. The medication dose is dissolved in a spoonful of aquarium water, and pellets or flakes are added, allowed to soak in the medication solution, and then placed in the aquarium. After treatment, 50% of the water is changed.

Treatment with other antibiotics:

  • Oxytetracycline hydrochloride: A dose of 30 mg (up to 50 mg in very hard water) per liter of water is used for 3 days. On the 3rd day, 30 – 50% of the water is changed, and the treatment is repeated. This medication is especially sensitive to light, so the treatment method without light must be followed
  • Minocycline: A dose of 7 mg per liter of water is used for 2 days, then 100% of the water is changed, and the treatment is repeated. If used more than twice, it is usually fatal. Therefore, it is used only in cases of extreme necessity.

Dno

Dno nádrže tvorí štrk, prípadne piesokmikroorganizmy. Štrk je ideálny o veľkosti zŕn 34 mm. Ak použijeme piesok, tak by mal byť hrubozrnný. Vo väčšine prípadov. Jemnozrnný piesok udusí pomerne rýchlo tlak vody a potom dochádza k nežiaducemu anaeróbnemu rozkladu. Do dna sadíme rastliny.

Dekorácia

Dekoráciu považujem z hľadiska prirodzenosti za veľmi podstatnú. Ide aj o estetický aspekt, aj o biologický. Dekorácia by mala zodpovedať nárokom tej ktorej taxonomickej skupine.

On zvyšuje vylučovaním vápnika tvrdosť vody, spolu s čím takmer vždy ide aj zvyšovanie alkality – zásaditosti. Travertín mám použitý v akváriu s druhmi z jazera Tanganika. Okrem toho mám aj spomínané drevo, kedysi som ho komponoval spolu s kameňmi, dnes mám skôr časť kamennú a časť drevenú. Okrem toho občas použijem jelšové šišky a dubové drevo a dubovú kôru.

Bottom

The bottom of the tank is typically composed of gravel or sand along with microorganisms. Gravel with grain sizes of 3 – 4 mm is ideal, while coarse-grained sand is recommended to prevent anaerobic decay. In some cases, soil can also be used as a substrate, especially for plant growth. Disturbing the bottom should be kept to a minimum, as it serves as a habitat for bacteria involved in the overall metabolism of the aquarium ecosystem. The bottom has a mechanical function as well, providing a place for planting.

Decoration

Decorations play a significant role in the aquarium, both aesthetically and biologically. Different types of rocks, wood (roots), and plants are used as decorations. The choice of rocks and minerals depends on the geographical origin of the fish species in the tank. Materials containing high levels of metals should be avoided. Wood, such as mangrove roots or African mopani, can be used, but care must be taken to ensure it does not negatively impact the water parameters. Decorations also provide hiding spaces, territorial boundaries, and influence the behavior of the fish. Live plants are considered decorations as well, contributing to the overall biotic and aesthetic aspects of the aquarium.

While not strictly necessary, a background can enhance the appearance of the aquarium. It can be as simple as a store-bought wallpaper or a painted dark color. Three-dimensional backgrounds can be created using materials like polystyrene or polyurethane foam. Travertine, a volcanic limestone, is discussed as a decorative rock, and its placement in the tank is described. The author also uses Back to Nature’s Slim Line background in cichlid tanks. This text provides guidance on the physical components of an aquarium, emphasizing their importance in creating a natural and functional environment for the fish.

Boden
