Stromy

Hits: 4427

Stromy, s ich výraznými kmeňmi a rozvetvenými korunami, tvoria obdivuhodné diela prírody a sú základnými stavebnými kameňmi ekosystémov po celom svete. Tieto živé organizmy sú neuveriteľne účinné, odolné a vytrvalé. Stromy čelia rôznym hrozbám, vrátane odlesňovania, klimatických zmien a chorôb. Odlesňovanie znižuje biodiverzitu a zvyšuje množstvo oxidu uhličitého v atmosfére.

Fotografie stromov majú schopnosť zachytiť nádheru a pôsobivosť prírody v jedinom snímku.

Ich výrazné črty môžu vyprávať príbehy o histórii a živote v ich okolí. Kombinácia techniky, kreativity a vnímania krásy v každom jednotlivom strome môže viesť k tvorbe úžasných a dojemných fotografií.

Trees, with their distinctive trunks and branching crowns, stand as remarkable masterpieces of nature and serve as fundamental building blocks of ecosystems worldwide. These living organisms are incredibly efficient, resilient, and enduring. However, trees face various threats, including deforestation, climate change, and diseases. Deforestation reduces biodiversity and increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Climate changes may lead to the spread of diseases and unwanted species that can harm trees. Protecting trees involves maintaining their natural habitats, sustainable timber harvesting, and supporting research to address diseases and pests. Trees represent a key element of nature; their conservation and sustainable management are essential not only for their preservation but also for humanity.

Trees have a complex structure that enables them to thrive in various conditions. Their basic parts include roots, trunk, branches, leaves, and fruits. Roots anchor the tree in the soil and absorb nutrients, while the trunk provides support and houses the transport system for water and nutrients. Branches and leaves facilitate photosynthesis, the process by which trees use sunlight to produce energy and generate oxygen. Fruits contain seeds used for reproduction. Trees form extensive ecosystems that provide shelter and food for numerous organisms. Their trunks and branches serve as habitats for birds, insects, and other creatures. Trees help maintain soil quality and create a microclimate in their surroundings. Their significance in ecosystems also lies in capturing and storing carbon dioxide. Trees have economic importance, providing wood used in various industries, from construction to furniture production. Additionally, they supply raw materials for the paper industry, and many plants and medicinal compounds come from trees, contributing to cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.

Photographing trees allows for the capture of the beauty and grandeur of nature in a single frame. Each tree, with its unique shape and character, offers photographers endless creative possibilities. The photographic interpretation of trees can showcase their majesty, resilience, and relationship with the environment. Composition and perspective play a crucial role in tree photography. Creating contrasts between trees and other elements of nature, such as mountains, lakes, or the sky, can add drama to the photograph. Experimenting with different angles, including low shots or capturing multiple branches, can yield unusual and captivating results. Light is a key factor in tree photography. Early morning or evening hours can create warm and soft lights that highlight the texture of the bark and the colors of the leaves. Contrastive light creates shadow play, adding drama to the image. Shots with striking sunlight rays or reflections can provide a beautiful and impactful effect. Fog can separate spaces and make even something as large as a tree stand out.

Tree photography sometimes captures not only the trees themselves but also the diversity of their surroundings. Including various plant species, flowers, or natural elements in the composition can add another dimension and color contrast. Likewise, capturing birds, insects, or other wildlife associated with tree life enhances the richness of the photograph. Many tree species stand out for their uniqueness and interest. Bonsai, sequoias, or ancient trees with distinctive shapes and age can be excellent subjects. Their remarkable features can tell stories about history and life in their environment. The combination of technique, creativity, and appreciation of beauty in each individual tree can lead to the creation of fascinating and poignant photographs.

Dog – Canis lupus familiaris is a domesticated subspecies of the Canis lupus, also known as the wolf. This animal species plays a significant role in people’s lives all over the world. There are many different breeds and types of dogs, varying in size, color, temperament, and purpose.

Biologically, dogs are characterized by a group way of life, which means they tend to form stable social groups. This behavior stems from their wolf ancestors, where there is a hierarchy and communication through body language, sounds, and scents. The anatomy of a dog is well adapted to their needs. They have a highly developed sense of smell, much more sensitive than humans. Their ears are capable of movement, allowing them to detect sounds from various directions. Their muscular body provides strength and endurance, making them suitable companions for hunting and other activities. Dogs have a fast metabolism, and exercise is crucial for them to maintain muscle mass and fitness.

In relation to humans, dogs are known for their loyalty and ability to form bonds with people. They are intelligent and easily learn various commands and tricks. They are useful to humans in various roles, such as companions, guards, guide dogs for the blind, police dogs, drug detection dogs, and search and rescue dogs. Currently, dogs play an important role in scientific research, where they are used to study behavior, genetics, and the treatment of various diseases. Their tracking abilities are also utilized in searching for animals in samples, such as remains in forests or human traces in various environments.

Živorodky – ryby mnohých akvaristov v minulosti aj v súčasnosti

Hits: 43208

Kto z akvaristov sa nestretol so živorodkami? Asi nikto. Živorodky sa vyskytujú v južnej časti Severnej Ameriky, v Strednej a v Južnej Amerike a malá časť z nich v Juhovýchodnej Ázii. Niektoré druhy žijú v brakických vodách, dokonca priamo v mori pri ústiach riek. Napr.

Who among aquarists hasn’t encountered livebearers? Probably no one. Everyone who has kept fish has encountered livebearers, and even non-aquarists have usually heard something about them. In the minds of most people, livebearers are primarily swordtails and guppies – those little red fish with pretty tails. However, the reality is, of course, much richer. In my opinion, livebearers represent a kind of connecting link in communication between those who are involved in aquatics and those who are not. They hold a prominent position because they are well-known.” I hope that with my contribution, I will enrich the knowledge, especially of those who see livebearers only as a narrow profile of species. Livebearers are an amazing group both biologically and in terms of breeding. Livebearers are found in the southern part of North America, in Central and South America, and a small portion of them in Southeast Asia. Some species live in brackish waters, even directly in the sea at river mouths. For example, Poecilia reticulata has been found in the open sea in coastal areas.

Predstavujú štyri čeľade: Goodeidae, Anablepidae, Poeciliidae (patriace do radu Cyprinodontiformes) a Hemiramphidae (patriace medzi Beloniformes). Medzi tzv.

Taxonomy

The commonly used term livebearers” for these fish is inaccurate, and the group of fish called livebearers” is artificially created – it lacks clear taxonomic justification. They represent four families: Goodeidae, Anablepidae, Poeciliidae (belonging to the order Cyprinodontiformes), and Hemiramphidae (belonging to the order Beloniformes). Among the so-called livebearers,” we find quite a few species that do not exhibit viviparity. There is currently a lot of movement in the taxonomy of this group, possibly because it is likely an evolutionarily young group. Livebearers are related to toothcarps. Viviparity itself is evaluated evolutionarily as a high degree of development. Just consider which groups of organisms exhibit the same ability – including, among others, the human being – Homo sapiens – that is, ourselves. The systematics of livebearers is described in detail further in the article.

Taxonomie

Colorful Livebearers

For the purpose of clear differentiation and understanding, I have taken the liberty of labeling commonly offered species of livebearers as colorful livebearers.” All of these are selectively bred species that look different in their natural habitats. The most well-known species are (a summary of some genera is provided at the end of the article):

Poecilia latipinna Lesueur, 1821 – Sailfin Molly,
Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859 – Guppy,
Poecilia sphenops Valenciennes, 1946 – Black Molly,
Poecilia velifera Regan, 1914 – Yucatan Molly,
Xiphophorus helleri Heckel, 1848 – Green Swordtail,
Xiphophorus maculatus Günther, 1866 – Southern Platyfish,
Xiphophorus variatus Meek, 1904 – Variable Platyfish.

In addition to these common fish, many other beautiful species belong here. In this context, it should be noted that what is common in our aquariums only remotely resembles the fish living in the wild – this especially applies to the species Poecilia reticulata.

Poecilia latipinna Lesueur, 1821 – Segelflossen-Molly,
Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859 – Guppy,
Poecilia sphenops Valenciennes, 1946 – Schwarzer Molly,
Poecilia velifera Regan, 1914 – Yucatan-Molly,
Xiphophorus helleri Heckel, 1848 – Grüner Schwertträger,
Xiphophorus maculatus Günther, 1866 – Südlicher Pracht-Platy,
Xiphophorus variatus Meek, 1904 – Variabler Pracht-Platy.

Malo by ísť o čistú a neprešľachtenú formu. Najznámejšie druhy: Poecilia wingei Kempkes, Isbrücker, 2005 – predtým Poeclia endleri, endlerka, Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859, Girardinus metallicus Poey, 1854, Limia nigrofasciata Regan, 1913, Xenotoca eiseni Rutter, 1896, Xiphophorus nezahualcoyotl Rauchenberger, Kallman, Morizot, 1990.

Wild Livebearers

The term wild,” or natural,” livebearers refers to those whose appearance closely resembles the state in the wild. It should be a pure and unaltered form. However, the practice is a bit more complicated, as some species, such as Poecilia wingei, among others, are still considered wild species, but their population among breeders may already be considered an aquarium form. Unfortunately, some species have already interbred in the hands of aquarists, especially with Poecilia reticulata, or there has been a change in behavior – for example, in Girardinus falcatus, where there has been tolerance towards offspring of another species, which wild G. falcatus does not tolerate. In our tanks, of course, wild species also change their coloration, but they still represent beautiful fish. Some species, including the famous endlers (the aforementioned P. wingei), are endangered. Some of them, like Characodon audax, probably no longer occur in the wild. The most well-known species include: Poecilia wingei Kempkes, Isbrücker, 2005 – formerly Poeclia endleri, Endler’s livebearer, Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859, Girardinus metallicus Poey, 1854, Limia nigrofasciata Regan, 1913, Xenotoca eiseni Rutter, 1896, Xiphophorus nezahualcoyotl Rauchenberger, Kallman, Morizot, 1990.

Oplodňovanie živorodkám zabezpečuje špeciálny orgán, ktorý vznikol zrastením lúčov ritnej plutvy – gonopódium, v prípade čeľade Goodeidae a živorodých zástupcov Hemiramphidae ide o andropódium. Andropódium vzniklo trochu iným spôsobom. Gonopódium sa vyvíja počas dospievania. Morfológia gonopódia je rozlišovacím znakom. Tzv. oplodnením do zásoby sa vyznačujú poecilidy. Ide zvyčajne o 3 – 4 vrhy, avšak bol popísaný prípad 11 vrhov bez ďalšieho oplodnenia. Ide o to, že samček oplodní samičku, no spermie v jej tele prežívajú určité časové obdobie. Čiže, ak samček oplodní samičku, ta je schopná produkovať potomstvo teoreticky aj bez samca a to počas dosť dlhého časového obdobia.

Biology

Fertilization in livebearers is ensured by a special organ, which evolved from the fusion of rays of the anal fin – the gonopodium, in the case of the family Goodeidae and livebearing representatives of Hemiramphidae, it is an andropodium. The andropodium developed in a slightly different way. The gonopodium develops during maturity. The morphology of the gonopodium is a distinguishing feature. So-called sperm storage fertilization is characteristic of poeciliids. This usually involves 3 – 4 broods, but a case of 11 broods without further fertilization has been described. The point is that the male fertilizes the female, but the sperm in her body survives for a certain period of time. So, if the male fertilizes the female, she is theoretically capable of producing offspring even without a male during a fairly long period of time.

Biologie

Breeding

Livebearers from North and Central America thrive in slightly to moderately hard water, with a minimum hardness level for breeding being 4 °dGH, and the optimum range being roughly between 1015 °dGH. A maximum hardness level of 25 °dGH is recommended. Harder water is not suitable for breeding, especially for Poecilia reticulata, as calcium does not favor them. I consider pH values ranging from 6 to 8.5 to be suitable for livebearers, as they are mostly found in waters with a pH above 7.5 in nature. Some breeders recommend adding salt to the water, especially for common species like swordtails, guppies, and mollies, which come from areas with higher salt concentrations. The recommended dosage of salt is as follows:

Poecilia sphenops – 1 tablespoon per 10 liters of water
Poecilia reticulata – 1 tablespoon per 20 liters of water
Xiphophorus helleri, X. maculatus, X. variatus – 1 tablespoon per 40 liters of water

If you decide to add salt, it is advisable to acclimate the fish to it gradually. Salt itself also acts preventively against diseases, but it is not necessary; personally, I do not currently add salt. Here too, it is important for the breeder to observe the fish’s condition and address the situation accordingly.

Zucht

Xiphophorus helleri, X. maculatus, X. variatus – 1 Esslöffel pro 40 Liter Wasser

As a curiosity related to salt, some marine fish keepers purposely breed guppies as food, acclimating them to salty water – they are interested in having guppies potentially live longer alongside marine fish than just one feeding session. It’s known that livebearers significantly burden the water with their waste, so stronger filtration, regular water changes, and deionization are necessary. As a long-time livebearer keeper, I consider it appropriate to grow aquatic plants together with livebearers to cover the entire bottom. The more plants we have in the tank, the less trouble fish waste will cause us. These need to be considered when selecting suitable tankmates. The commonly held belief that livebearers are undemanding is distorted, mostly because their requirements are primarily species-specific. Additionally, cultivated forms, especially albino ones, are very delicate. Take guppies, for example – yes, once their keeping posed no major issues, and they prolifically bred for aquarium hobbyists, but today, the situation is different. Breeding guppies today is a challenging task. For livebearer breeding, a recommended gender ratio for most species is 1:5 in favor of females. In any case, it’s advisable to have more females.

V každom prípade nie je vhodné podporovať chov napr. divokej formy Poecilia reticulata spolu so šľachtenou formou, prípadne kombináciu Poecilia wingei spolu s Poecilia reticulata v akejkoľvek forme.

If I were to recommend which fish are suitable to be kept together with livebearers, I would find myself in a rather difficult situation. Mexican swordtails, fancy guppies, larger wild species such as the genus Xenotoca, I would recommend keeping them with armored catfish, small species of American cichlids, or carp-like species such as the genus Barbus, Brachydanio. In the case of keeping small species, the situation is even more challenging – American tetras, armored catfish of the genera Corydoras, Brochis, small carp-like fish such as Boraras, or the genus Badis of the Badidae family are suitable. It is advisable to keep wild livebearers in a single-species tank – a separate tank for each species. Given the size of the fish, the tank does not have to be very large, often a 50-liter tank is sufficient. If, for example, you do not have enough aquariums, or you want to experiment, it is possible to combine and keep wild livebearers in multi-species tanks. However, it is desirable to ensure that we select species for the same aquarium that do not crossbreed with each other. In any case, it is not advisable to promote breeding, for example, of the wild form of Poecilia reticulata together with the cultivated form, or the combination of Poecilia wingei with Poecilia reticulata in any form.

Feeding

Livebearers, which are commonly found in stores as well as in aquarium hobbyists’ tanks, are quite vividly colored. It follows that they must obtain pigment from somewhere to remain so beautiful and colorful. Therefore, it cannot be said that livebearers are undemanding when it comes to feeding. If we want to maintain the beautiful colors and condition of the fish, we must feed them well. I recommend mainly cyclops, plant-based ingredients – for example, spinach, lettuce, which are surely available to everyone. Feeding live food is very suitable, especially fruit flies, which are very gratefully accepted by larger species. Of course, we can also feed them with brine shrimp, micro worms, grindal worms, vinegar eels, daphnia, corretja, etc. In the case of breeding young, similar rules apply as in the breeding of other fish, only multiplied – it is very suitable to feed the fry six times a day, then they really grow like weeds.

Reproduction

Livebearers usually reproduce relatively easily and willingly even in a community tank. This fact is likely also the reason for their widespread breeding. They give birth to live young, which are capable of independent existence immediately after birth. The gestation period is approximately four weeks, although it is not specific for every species; some species give birth to 1 – 2 young daily during the birthing of offspring. Some species, individuals are cannibals, and they devour their offspring, while others do not. Alternatively, if a female gives birth in the presence of other fish, it is not uncommon for her to not pay attention to her young, but the surrounding fish may collect” them. It is also interesting that a female giving birth often does not notice her young during childbirth, but as soon as the birth is over, she begins the hunt for nutritious food – or at least the relationship between mother and offspring changes. My experience indicates that these instincts are influenced by how the fish feel in their environment and what food they receive. If they feel well and receive quality nutrition, preferably live food, they are rewarded with peaceful coexistence among young, adults, and newly born individuals.

Vermehrung

Spôsob akým dochádza ku rodeniu a vôbec otázka živorodosti je zaujímavá. Poeciliidae majú v tele oplodnené ikry a len tesne pred pôrodom sa ikry otvoria a z tela samičky vychádzajú už malé napodobeniny dospelcov.

The way livebearing and the question of viviparity occur is interesting. Poeciliidae have fertilized eggs in their bodies, and just before giving birth, the eggs open, and small replicas of adults emerge from the female’s body. Other families do not exhibit such ovoviviparity; the young in the mother’s body are not in egg-like capsules. Remarkably, the female is capable of storing sperm from a male for later use – except for the Goodeidae family. There has been a recorded case where a female Gambusia affinis gave birth 11 times without the presence of a male. If an already fertilized female is fertilized again by another male, the preference for the new offspring lies with the new genetic material, not the one already present in the female’s body. The offspring of livebearers are large – much larger than the offspring of egg-laying fish. Initially, however, they grow slower than those of egg-layers, but after a month, they catch up. However, the differences depend on the breeder’s experience and capabilities. In commercial breeding of colorful livebearers, methods are often used to optimize the number of offspring. Females are placed in various baskets or birthing boxes. These devices mechanically isolate females – potential predators of newborn fish, resulting in a higher number of fish.

In livebearers, functional hermaphroditism is known. Female Poecilia reticulata were isolated experimentally 24 hours after birth. Some of them gave birth despite strict separation of offspring after reaching sexual maturity. These phenotypic females were histologically examined, revealing that they simultaneously possess functional gonads of both sexes. Thanks to this hermaphroditic arrangement, reproduction of unfertilized females by males – so-called parthenogenesis – is possible. (Dokoupil, 1981). The topic of breeding – selective breeding, crossing – is closely related to reproduction. Platies, swordtails, mollies have various forms, but guppies are the most difficult to maintain. Mollies (molly) – molinézias is a term for species of the genus Poecilia, except for P. reticulata. From the common species, these are: Poecilia latipinna, Poecilia sphenops, Poecilia velifera.

There are many morphological and color variants, especially in the species Poecilia reticulata. In the case of deformed individuals or undesirable forms, I recommend removing them from breeding. Problems in breeding – for example, when breeding black mollies – the black form of Poecilia sphenops, we may encounter the offspring not being entirely black like the parents. This is due to partial reversion to the wild form – the genetic material of the original form from nature carries significant weight. Some individuals may appear as calico forms – as if sprinkled with black dye. Many of these individuals acquire color throughout their bodies only in adulthood. In any case, occasionally refreshing the breeding stock with an individual from a different environment, for example, from a known breeder, from a store, etc., is advisable – and this applies to all livebearers and all fish in general. In breeding, it is important to determine whether the trait is recessive or dominant. If someone wants to seriously engage in breeding colorful livebearers and wants to exhibit their fish, it is advisable to have information about genetics. For example, if the trait is dominant, its inheritance is generally passed down even when crossed with an individual without this trait. If the trait is recessive, we must find an individual carrying the same trait to preserve it.

The stability of the population is achieved after the third generation, when the desired trait occurs and if the offspring are healthy, viable, and fertile. Especially, maintaining some hybrids in a stable form can be a big challenge. Many hybrids also occur in nature. Platies like Xiphophorus maculatus, X. variatus, X. helleri often crossbreed, resulting in numerous variants. For instance, the black molly Poecilia sphenops is likely the result of breeding the wild forms of P. sphenops, P. latipinna, and P. velifera. The shape and coloration of guppies, especially Poecilia reticulata, are highly variable, making it very demanding for a breeder to maintain individual varieties, requiring both experience and space, as such breeding demands multiple tanks. Female long-tail forms have patterns on their caudal fins, while short-tail ones lack coloration, but it’s usually not easy to determine the exact form of a female – making breeding guppies more difficult than platies, swordtails, and mollies. Therefore, the focus should be on males. The fundamental competitive shapes of guppies are as follows: flag, lyre, shovel, needle, scimitar, twin swordtails, circle, fan, lower swordtail, upper swordtail, flame, and triangle. If you aim for success in exhibitions, it’s advisable to keep the fish in tanks with substrate and plants. Competitive exhibitions are organized within the livebearer category, adhering to prescribed standards, covering categories like Poecilia reticulata and Xipho-Molly. There are standards for: Poecilia sphenops, Poecilia velifera, Poecilia latipinna, Xiphophorus helleri, Xiphophorus maculatus, Xiphophorus variatus. Besides colored livebearers, occasionally wild livebearers are also exhibited. As an example from a scorecard for Poecilia reticulata, the maximum score for the body is 28 points, including 8 for length, 8 for shape, and 12 for color. The dorsal fin is scored out of 23 points, with 5 for length, 8 for shape, and 10 for color. The caudal fin can earn up to 44 points: 10 for length, 20 for shape, and 14 for color. Vitality is rated for 5 points.

Behavior

Livebearers mainly inhabit the middle and upper parts of the water column. Their behavior shows patterns of social hierarchy similar to some mammals, dominated by an alpha male. In case of its departure, it is replaced. More aggressive behavior can be observed only in male swordtails – Xiphophorus helleri. When keeping them, it is advisable to house either one male or at least five, to distribute aggression. This scenario is similar to breeding African cichlids of the Tropheus genus. Another interesting behavior is exhibited by the predatory species Belonesox belizamus, which mates in a very rapid manner because the twice as large female tends to eat the smaller male after mating.

Verhalten

Spôsobujú ho baktérie Pseudomonas, Aeromonas a iné. Liečiť možno Acriflavínom.
  • mykobakterióza – tuberkulóza rýb – brušná vodnateľnosť, prípade silné vychudnutie – prepadnutie bruška. Je spôsobená baktériou Mycobacterium. Je veľmi ťažko liečiteľná, vhodnejšie je napadnuté jedince odstrániť. Ako liečivo môžeme skúsiť použiť metronidazol – entizol.

Diseases

Unfortunately, livebearers also suffer from diseases – the old saying healthy as a fish” was certainly not coined by an aquarist. I’ll briefly mention some of the most common diseases:

  1. Ichthyophthyriosis – known as white spot disease caused by the protozoan Ichthyophthirius multifilis. Treatment – salt baths, using FMC, etc.
  2. Bacterial fin rot – a major problem especially in bred guppies. It is caused by bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, and others. Treatment may involve Acriflavine.
  3. Mycobacteriosis – fish tuberculosis – symptoms include abdominal dropsy and severe emaciation. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium. It is very difficult to treat; it’s better to remove affected individuals. Metronidazole – entizol can be tried as a medication.

Krankheiten

Transport a nakladanie s rastlinami a rybami

Hits: 9224

Takže voda by mala siahať maximálne do polovice sáčiku, odporúčam do tretiny.. Neustály pohyb pri transporte dokáže zabezpečiť neustále zmiešavanie vody so vzduchom.

Následne ryby zo sieťky prenesieme do akvária, ideálne do karanténnej nádrže. Ak si trúfate, ryby je ohľaduplnejšie možné preniesť do akvária mokrou rukou.. V prvom rade, nikdy nemiešajte vodu z cudzieho zdroja s tou vašou.

When buying fish and plants, we should first take a good look. Fish should look healthy. Unnaturally green, blue, or yellow water is likely a sign of current or previous treatment. Similarly, a newly used UV lamp should raise questions in us. If we know that the goods in the store have just been imported, let’s be patient; often imported fish and just transported fish are still acclimatizing. Their possible air transport is very stressful, and losses are quite common. Fish should behave appropriately according to the species; they must not be apathetic, and there should be no visible signs of disease, mold, shedding fins, bitten body parts, etc. Otherwise, let’s wait for the fish to acclimatize or heal. On the other hand, we should know that the presence of many people, more or less provisional conditions in each aquarium, causes stress to the fish, and that fish are not perfectly colored.

Plants can be judged more tolerantly because they almost never have optimal conditions in stores. They suffer more than fish, but their manifestation is not so noticeable to people; the effect manifests later, but the symptoms of change persist for a longer period. Ideally, we should buy plants that give a fresh impression. When transporting fish and plants, it is advisable to consider certain knowledge. Fish are most often transported in polyethylene bags. They need space, but attention should be paid to a tightly closed bag system – do not overdo it with water. It is important for there to be oxygen in the water, and this is provided by the space above the water when the bag is sealed with a rubber band. So the water should only reach halfway up the bag; I recommend up to a third. Constant movement during transport ensures constant mixing of water with air. Air can be injected with a device. There are even oxygen tablets, but their use is relatively rare because they are not exactly the right thing. Among other things, they dissolve quite quickly. Especially if the water pH is higher, there may be too high an oxygen concentration or undesirable metabolic processes in the water. It is advisable to have an air pump available, with an air stone especially during the quiet phase of transport. For example, when transporting in a thermal box. There are versions powered by batteries, which is useful, for example, in a car, train, etc. We must pay attention to the temperature. If it is cold and fish or plants could be exposed to cold, measures should be taken to minimize these effects.

If we transport a larger quantity, a climate-controlled car, a thermal box, a wooden box lined with polystyrene, etc., are suitable. There are also tablets that produce heat, but their use is rare. On a smaller scale, we protect the bag with our own body – we hide it under a coat, under a sweater, etc. When transporting, the fish are in an environment that does not meet their expectations; they are stressed. Therefore, in this case, I am inclined to apply a neutralizer that stabilizes the water conditions and calms the fish – one such is Aquatan from the company SERA. Darkness also helps. If we transport plants for a short time, water is almost superfluous in the bag. Usually, it is enough for the plants to be as if dewy – just pulled out of the water. If we intend to transport plants for a longer time – more than 10 hours – we water them only slightly. The problem with transporting aquatic plants is that they break in the water. For example, if we transport an aquarium with fish in a car, we drain the water almost to the bottom and cover it. This is the best way to transport it. The fundamental problem is releasing the fish. Because the water in the bag is definitely different from yours in the aquarium. Among other things, it can be a source of infection. When we bring fish, plants, we should proceed as follows. Prepare a bucket and a net. First, it is necessary to equalize the temperatures – the one in the bag and the one in your aquarium. This is achieved by immersing the bag in the tank for half an hour. Then pour the bag into the bucket, on which the net is placed. Then transfer the fish from the net to the aquarium, ideally to a quarantine tank. If you dare, it is more considerate to transfer the fish to the aquarium with wet hands.. First of all, never mix water from a foreign source with yours.

When treating water, caution is necessary. Knowledge of chemistry is useful. It is necessary to realize that without responsibility towards living organisms, it is not ethical to approach experiments with changes in water parameters. It is useful to familiarize oneself with the parameters of water. Qualitatively, all changes can be made by mixing with water of different properties. Monitoring water parameters, adjusting hardness, and pH are often overemphasized. Fish bred for generations in captivity are often adapted to our conditions. It is not paramount for fish and plants to live in water with the same pH and hardness as they do in nature, but to meet as many conditions as possible for their successful development. Do not get lost in constant measurements and attempts to change. For regular aquarium practice, water parameters are overrated.

Pomôže staršia mraznička, chladiarenský prístroj a šikovný majster.

Raising the water temperature with a heater is quite common in various areas, not just in aquariums. However, a far more challenging problem is how to cool the water. This question is primarily addressed by aquarists dealing with the breeding of marine organisms. Here, the option to utilize the principle of Peltier cells presents itself. An old freezer, refrigeration device, and a skilled craftsman can help. The second option is purchasing from a store. Cooling water in this way is financially demanding. On a small scale, ice can be used, but it is dangerous – because melting ice requires a lot of energy. Ice is a solid substance and has a high thermal capacity – it requires more energy to transition to a liquid state for the same temperature change. Let’s proceed cautiously so we don’t have to experience temperature extremes.

Varom vyzrážame len uhličitanovú tvrdosť a to maximálne o 2.7 °dKH. Anacharis densa a živočíchov, najmä ulitníkov a lastúrnikov znižujú obsah Ca a Mg vo vode.

If we want to change the water hardness, with common inexpensive means, we can only increase it. We can increase the content of calcium and magnesium with calcium carbonate – CaCO3, magnesium carbonate – MgCO3, calcium sulfate – CaSO4, magnesium sulfate – MgSO4, calcium chloride – CaCl2. Naturally, for example, with limestone. However, if we want to achieve a quick change, we must use a stronger concentration. Finally, effective commercial products are available that can quickly increase hardness. However, a much more difficult question arises if we intend to decrease the hardness. It is possible to use precipitation with oxalic acid, but the equilibrium of this process is small. However, if we were able to filter this water mechanically with a very fine filter, we might achieve the desired result. Boiling water to reduce hardness is very uneconomical. The effect is minimal. Boiling only precipitates carbonate hardness, up to a maximum of 2.7 °dKH. In addition, boiling also destroys the little life that is in the water, so I do not recommend boiling. Activated charcoal partially reduces water hardness, similarly some types of plants such as Anacharis densa and animals, especially snails and crustaceans, reduce the content of Ca and Mg in the water. They are able to accumulate large amounts of calcium in their shells, as they are practically dependent on its occurrence. Ampullaria are able to bind a relatively large amount of calcium into their shells in larger quantities. Conversely, in its absence, their shells soften. Peat also reduces water hardness to a small extent. Mixing softer water is of course possible to achieve lower hardness, and it works linearly. For practical purposes, we have the following options in principle.

Distillation – In the distillation column, water is stripped of ions. Distillation generates a significant amount of wastewater. The use of large volumes of water is necessary because distillation involves high temperatures that need to be cooled. The distillation column is a considerable investment, used by breeders who have a larger number of tanks. The efficiency of distillation is very high. However, it must be said that distilled water is not very suitable for aquarium purposes. It is sterile water and very labile. Therefore, it is good to mix this water. Reverse osmosis is ideal for this reason. Technical distilled water from the store is not very suitable for aquarists. The operation of the distillation column itself does not undergo any significant wear and tear, and in any case, under normal use, it does not require high subsequent investments.

Oproti destilačnej sústave majú jednu veľkú nevýhodu v trvanlivosti – membrány a filtračné média osmotickej kolóny je nutné časom meniť, pretože inak reverzka prestane plniť svoju funkciu.

Reverse osmosis – a process that utilizes semipermeability. Osmosis is a known process in which the exchange of substances occurs due to osmotic pressure assuming semipermeability between two systems. For clarification – simple diffusion, mixing cannot occur because there is a boundary, an obstacle between two systems. But due to the fact that this boundary is semipermeable, thanks to osmotic pressure, the flow of substances occurs. Reverse osmosis also utilizes this, but with the difference that in reverse osmosis, ions are completely removed, there is no equalization of osmotic pressure on both sides. The water obtained in this way is suitable for aquarists. Finally, its efficiency is not as high as in distillation. Water from a reverse osmosis system typically reaches 110% of the original conductivity value. There are commercially available reverse osmosis units on the market that can be purchased. They do not take up as much space as distillation systems. However, compared to distillation systems, they have one major disadvantage in terms of durability – membranes and filtration media of the reverse osmosis unit need to be replaced over time because otherwise, the reverse osmosis system will fail to function properly.

Iontomeničom (Ionexom) – elektrolytická úprava cez katexanex, z ktorých jeden je záporne nabitý a priťahuje katióny a druhý kladne a priťahuje anióny.

Ion exchange (Ionex) – electrolytic treatment via a cathex and anex, one of which is negatively charged and attracts cations, and the other is positively charged and attracts anions. Water passes through these two main parts, and ions are bound to the individual parts. This achieves demineralization from ions. Ionex could also be easily assembled amateurishly. The problem is that cathex and anex have their capacity. Over time, it must be regenerated to maintain its physical properties and the entire system to be effective. Regeneration is carried out by the action of various specific substances, in some cases, kitchen salt. As an ion exchange (changer) for calcium, permutit, wofatit, and cabunit are used, for example. Selective ion exchangers are designed to eliminate certain elements – components in water. For nitrogen – N, monmorillonite, and clinoptiolite are suitable.

Reduction of conductivity is achieved by the same methods as described for water hardness. Similarly, increasing conductivity. The source water available to us typically has a slightly alkaline pH, with drinking tap water usually around 7.5. For many fish, it is suitable to increase the acidity to values around 6.5. We have several options – either change the pH purely chemically or more naturally. pH change is more effective when water contains fewer dissolved substances. If it contains a lot of salts, the pH change will be somewhat smaller, and any fluctuations in this value will be smaller. The effect of NaCl – salt on the pH of water is negligible for the aquarist because it is a salt of a strong base – NaOH and a strong acid – HCl, so it does not affect the pH. Practically, NaCl affects pH only because aquarium water is a solution containing various substances with which NaCl reacts. However, this effect is small and difficult to predict.

Ak by sme predsa len použili silné kyseliny: 2HCl + Ca(HCO3)2 = CaCl2 + 2H2CO3 – reakciou kyseliny chlorovodíkovej (soľnej) vzniká chlorid vápenatý.

For reducing pH, it is suitable to use weak phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄). H₃PO₄ is a weak acid. The amount necessary should be determined by experimentation. The pH change by any means also depends on the salt content, partially on temperature, and pressure. It can be roughly estimated that to lower the pH in a 100-liter tank, H₃PO₄ should be applied in milliliters. I do not recommend using other acids; however, for your safety, it should also be a weak acid of simple composition. H₃PO₄ is commonly used to reduce hardness. When using H₃PO₄, the following reactions occur (in the listed reactions, calcium Ca can be replaced with magnesium Mg):

2H₃PO₄ + 3Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca₃(PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – acid reacts with calcium bicarbonate to form soluble calcium phosphate and weak carbonic acid. H₂CO₃ is unstable and can break down into water and carbon dioxide. The resulting phosphate can be fertilizer for fish, algae, or a source of phosphorus for fish.

2H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – soluble dihydrogen phosphate calcium is formed.

H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaHPO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – insoluble calcium hydrogen phosphate is formed.

If we were to use strong acids:

2HCl + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaCl₂ + 2H₂CO₃ – reaction of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) forms calcium chloride.

H₂SO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaSO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – reaction of sulfuric acid forms calcium sulfate.

If the source water contains limestone, the water’s buffering capacity will be evident – calcium carbonate CaCO₃ reacts with the resulting carbonic acid to form bicarbonate, entering the carbonic acid cycle. In this way, our options to influence pH are limited. pH will decrease for a certain time, but not for long; this mainly depends on the concentration of bicarbonates (from CO₂) and the amount of acid used – it’s obvious that the buffering capacity has its limits. In the case of high water hardness, continuous CO₂ treatment is more effective.

2H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ + 6H₂CO₃ – lösliches Dihydrogenphosphatcalcium entsteht.

H₃PO₄ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ = CaHPO₄ + 2H₂CO₃ – unlösliches Calciumdihydrogenphosphat entsteht.

Naturally, pH can also be lowered. Suitable options include alder cones, decaying wood, peat, peat extract, etc. However, everything depends on understanding the specific requirements of individual fish and plants. Some fish do not tolerate peat extract. Peat extract is often used for dips, for example, for tetra fish. Peat reduces pH. Decaying wood has its drawbacks. However, it can generally be said, especially for beginning aquarists, that using various materials in the aquarium is not as dangerous as most people think. On the contrary, their long-term and gradual activity makes their effect on pH change much more acceptable than using pure chemicals. Moreover, the nature of the acids leached from these materials often has a beneficial effect on fish health and plant growth. Humic acids, organic complexes, chelates, and other organic substances that are often a natural part of our fish and plants, even in their native habitats, play a role in this process.

To increase pH, baking soda – NaHCO3 is used. However, when it comes to raising pH, this purely chemical method is used to a much lesser extent. Naturally, pH can be best increased by using a substrate. Carbonates contained in limestone, travertine commonly shift pH valuesto levels above 8. A very simple water adjustment is the use of salt. If we want to achieve a constant level of salt, do not forget to add salt during water changes and top-ups. Salt is used for some types of fish, especially for brackish species. Brackish species live in nature at the intersection of fresh and saltwater, for example, at the mouths of large rivers into the sea. Salt is also recommended for some livebearers. Livebearers live in waters of moderate hardness in South and North America. The appropriate dosage for guppies is 2 – 3 tablespoons of salt per 40 liters of water. For black mollies – a typical brackish species – even a little more, 5 tablespoons per 40 liters of water. We can use both table and sea salt, which can be obtained in stores. When starting with salt application, let’s be cautious at first, proceed carefully, and let the fish gradually get used to the salt, as osmotic pressure is tricky. A sudden change in conductivity caused by a sudden increase in NaCl will lead to negative stress – especially the surface – the fish’s skin is susceptible to damage. This property is utilized in treatment.

Salt is recommended for African lake cichlids. They contain relatively high concentrations of sodium – Na. In literature, up to 0.5 kg per 100 liters of water is mentioned, but I recommend one tablespoon per 40 liters of water. Salt appears to act as a transporter of metabolic processes and a catalyst. NaCl dissociates first into sodium cation and chlorine anion. Chlorine acts as a disinfectant, and sodium participates in biological reactions. Organic dyes, drugs can be successfully removed by activated carbon, partially by peat. Activated carbon has a wide range of applications. It is a relatively effective prevention against infection because it adsorbs a lot of harmful substances. It works as a filter. It has such a structure that it has a huge surface area, one mm3 provides up to 100150 m² of area. It is also used in commercially available filters. It can also partially reduce water hardness. However, it should be realized that its action is undesirable, especially in tanks with plants, due to its adsorption capacity. Activated carbon also removes nutrients from plants. Of course, its capabilities are exhaustible – after some time, the capacity becomes saturated, and it is necessary to either regenerate or replace the activated carbon. Regeneration is a chemical process, too costly for the aquarist, actually unnecessary. Activated carbon could be partially regenerated by boiling, but this is quite impractical. If we have powdered activated carbon available, we have won – its efficiency is practically the highest, and therefore we can use the smallest volume. The solution is to implement it into the filter, but also for example, to pour it into a stocking and place it in the tank. If some of it disperses, do not despair, activated carbon is harmless, it does not cloud the water.

In the water from the municipal water supply, various gaseous components are present, primarily intended for disinfection. They are essential for humans, but their impact on aquarium life is undesirable. One of these gases is chlorine, which is a well-known toxic gas, even for humans, but in low doses, it is harmless to humans and kills bacteria. Drinking water usually contains chlorine in the range of 0.10.2 mg/l, with a maximum of up to 0.5 mg/l. Chlorine is particularly harmful to fish gills. To rid water of chlorine, for example, letting it stand is suitable. There are products on the market based on sodium thiosulfate – Na2S2O3, which can remove chlorine from water. Allowing water to stand will rid it of chlorine in approximately one day. We just need to allow gases to escape – so no closed containers. Partially, immediate water filling will help, with the longest possible transport of water in the hose. A significant portion of chlorine will evaporate this way. There are also other gases in the water – complete degassing by standing occurs after four days. Various infusions are used for the swabs of some species, such as infusions of aquatic plants. These can literally prepare water – stabilize it, provide desired substances, such as trace elements, or possibly bind more harmful components. Wood is also used, oak, alder, willow. Brown coal is also suitable. Peat acts as a partial adsorbent. On the other hand, it adds humic acids and other organic substances to the water. Especially recently, ultraviolet light has been used for water treatment. Often also for its sterilization from pathogens. It can also be used in such a way – when the entire volume of water is affected – for example, in the case of an acute disease, but usually, the UV lamp is used as a filter, which effectively rids the water of various organism pathogens. Water treated with a sufficiently strong UV lamp, for example, does not become cloudy. Its use minimizes microbial infections. UV lamps are readily available on the market for aquarium supplies. As for a strong lamp – the wattage is determined by the volume of the tank. I do not recommend using the UV lamp continuously.
