Variatusky patria medzi živorodky. Sú veľmi podobné Xiphophorus maculatus. Ich slovenský názov je plata pestrá. Pochádzajú z južného Mexika. Xiphophorus variatus je pestrá a živá ryba, ktorá sa vyznačuje svojou farebnou rozmanitosťou, žije v jazerách až po pomalé rieky s bujnou vodnou vegetáciou.
