Veľmi žravý druh patriaci do čeľade Ampullariidae. Je úplne nevhodný do rastlinných akvárií. Obľubuje rastliny a dokáže ich skonzumovať veľké množstvo v krátkej dobe. Napr. do akvárií s africkými cichlidami. Kladie vajíčka v rôsolovitom slize. Bola nájdená v Brazílii, v Hondurase, vo Venezuele, v Paname, v Kostarike, na Floride, v Texase (Alexandra Behrendt).
A highly voracious species belonging to the Ampullariidae family. It is entirely unsuitable for planted aquariums. It favors plants and can consume a large amount of them in a short period. It also feeds on algae, making it suitable for “rocky” tanks without aquatic plants, where it consumes leftover food and algae, including filamentous algae. For example, in aquariums with African cichlids. It lays eggs in a gelatinous slime. It has been found in Brazil, Honduras, Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica, Florida, and Texas (Alexandra Behrendt).
The family Ampullariidae, commonly known as Apple snails, are sometimes also referred to as mystery snails. The species Pomacea bridgesi typically grows to a length of 6 – 7 cm, with a maximum size of 15 cm. It originates from South America, specifically the Rio Grande, Reyes River at Beni, and the Amazon River basin. Synonymously, it is also called Ampullarius australis. P. bridgesii belongs to the Ampullariidae family, characterized by the need for both a female and a male for reproduction. This species does not exhibit hermaphroditism. While other species belong to this group, only the P. bridgesii genus is suitable for planted aquariums because it is the only one that does not consume plants. The care of these snails, ampullaries, does not require any special demands, but the same cannot be said about their breeding. Nevertheless, their breeding does not impose significant requirements either. It is sufficient for the ampullaria to have access to a dry area, typically creating a cocoon on the tank’s cover glass or a protruding leaf.
The calcium content in the water affects their breeding, and this can be a concern in soft water, where providing real cuttlebone is necessary. Snails extract calcium from the cuttlebone, which is crucial for their development. Some aquarium enthusiasts, especially those with planted tanks, use snails to soften water. Snails naturally absorb calcium from the water and can bind a considerable amount into their shells. Conversely, a lack of calcium can lead to their shells weakening and shrinking.
Ďalšie triedy Monoplacophhora, Scaphopoda a Cephalopoda (hlavonožce) nie.
In tanks, snails are commonly kept, belonging to the class Gastropoda, and to a lesser extent, bivalves of the class Lamellibranchia (Bivalvia). Other classes such as Monoplacophora, Scaphopoda, and Cephalopoda (cephalopods) are not typically found in aquariums, although they are classified as mollusks. In this aquaristic section, we consider only aquatic species, while terrestrial ones are more relevant to terraristics.
The term “snails” is often used, but it’s not entirely accurate. We should refer to them as gastropods, including bivalves. Snails play a role in the aquarium as consumers of unused material, such as decaying leaves, leftover food, dead fish, and other organic remains. Their activity is particularly desirable in breeding tanks, where organic waste can theoretically accumulate more. Some of them, like apple snails (ampullaria), can significantly affect water quality due to their excrement, so a large individual is recommended to have at least 30 liters of water.
Snails also feed on algae and, in the absence of food, can consume plants, creating small holes in them. The shells of water snails are composed of calcium, so they struggle in very soft waters – they require calcium. In case of its deficiency, their shells become soft, and the snails deteriorate overall. This means that snails, in larger quantities, significantly influence water hardness. If the water is soft, you can add a source of calcium, such as cuttlebone, to the water for the snails. Regarding the formation of reproductive cells, they are mostly hermaphrodites, but some are gonochoristic. Snails are prey for some fish species, especially smaller ones. Gouramis, other labyrinth fish, cichlids, and loaches enjoy feeding on them.
Slimáky majú jednoduché telo, ktoré tvorí svalnatá noha a schránka – ulita. V prípade slizniakov ulita chýba. Niektoré sú hermafrodity, čiže disponujú oboma pohlavnými orgánmi. Iné majú oddelené pohlavné role. Sú bylinožravé, živia sa aj rozkladajúcimi rastlinami. V ústnom otvore majú radulu – drsný jazyk. Niektoré druhy sú využívané v medicíne, ich sliz má liečebné účinky.
Snails have a relatively significant impact on the ecosystem. They belong to the mollusk class Gastropoda and are distributed worldwide. They inhabit various environments, from gardens to forests and aquatic ecosystems. Snails have a simple body consisting of a muscular foot and a shell. In the case of slugs, the shell is absent. Some are hermaphrodites, possessing both male and female reproductive organs, while others have separate gender roles. They are herbivores, feeding on plants and also decomposing plant matter. They have a radula, a rough tongue, in their oral cavity. Some species are utilized in medicine, as their slime has healing properties.
