Sandberg – svedok minulosti, klenot súčasnosti

Hits: 7781

Sandberg is part of Devínska Kobyla. Many people from Bratislava often visit Sandberg. It’s really just a stone’s throw away from Devínska Nová Ves.

Sandberg is a paleontological site of European significance from the Miocene period. It was uncovered by a sand quarry. It consists of remnants of the Miocene sea that once covered the Vienna Basin. Sands with intercalations of gravelly sands, sandstones, and breccias were horizontally deposited on Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous limestones dating back 160180 million years ago, during a massive sea uplift 1416 million years ago. The sandstone wall exhibits visible horizontal benches of more resistant sandstone and litotamnium limestone. Massive boulders of sandstone and litotamnium limestone remain on the slopes and at the foot of the hill, remnants of the last chamber blast. Around 300 species of fossils of gastropods, bivalves, sea urchins, sponges, foraminifera, and larger marine and terrestrial animals have been found here. Most famous are the discoveries of shark teeth and bony fish, whale vertebra, remains of turtles, monkeys, seals, woolly rhinoceros, cave bear, and birds. Several endangered and protected sand-loving species are represented in the current flora, such as Peucedanum arenarium, Minuartia glaucina, and Gypsophila paniculata (Information Board). The oldest geological layers are over 100 million years old. During the Tertiary period, Sandberg alternated between a sea bottom, a reef, or part of a coastal island system (devinskakobyla.sk).

Sand used to be mined here, transported to the port on the Morava River by an overhead cable car. During the Tertiary period, about 1416 million years ago, a sea covered this area (panorama.sk). As the name suggests, Sandberg consists of sands, sandstones, litotamnium, lumachella, and sandy limestones and breccias, as well as sandy claystones. From a geological point of view, these rocks were deposited for a short time, so they are poorly consolidated. Thanks to this, Sandberg is a world-famous site of Neogene fossils. Over 300 species of fossilized organisms have been found here. For example, bivalves, worms, sponges, oysters, gastropods, sea urchins, mosses, foraminifera, sharks, seals, and of course fish. Even the vertebra of a whale, Mesocetus hungaricus, was found here. Sandberg was also the seabed of a sea 60 meters deep, as well as a beach, a reef, or land. Washed here were mainly remnants of organisms similar to today’s rhinos, antelopes, canine predators, mastodons, and deinotheriums from the northern slopes. Significant are the findings of fragments of the monkey Pliopithecus antiguus and Sivapithecus darwini, considered ancestors of today’s Indian gibbons. Teeth of Dryopithecus, classified as predecessors of today’s apes, have also been found here (devinska.sk). Marine organisms found here as fossils dated back 1416 million years ago (sazp.sk). Even the vertebra of the spine of a Tertiary whale was found here, discovered by the children of Albín Brunovský (Vodička). The discovery of almost the entire carapace of a turtle is stunning (panorama.sk).

A Sandberg a Devínska Kobyly része. Sok bratislavai gyakran látogatja a Sandberget.

Ennek köszönhetően a Sandberg világhírű a neogén kori fosszíliák szempontjából. Jelentős a Pliop

ithecus antiguus és a Sivapithecus darwini majmok maradványainak felfedezése, amelyeket az indiai gibbonsok őseinek tekintenek. Itt találtak Dryopithecus fogakat is, amelyeket az emberi majmok őseinek tartanak (devinska.sk). A tengeri szervezetek, amelyeket itt fosszíliaként találtak, kb. 14 – 16 millió évvel ezelőtt keletkeztek (sazp.sk). Itt találták meg a harmadidőszaki bálna gerincét is, amelyet Albín Brunovský gyermekei fedeztek fel (Vodička). Lenyűgöző a teknős páncélának majdnem teljes felfedezése is (panorama.sk).

Devínske jazero

Hits: 7972

Devínske jazero je oblasť medzi riekou MoravouDevínskou Novou Vsou. Táto bývalá citlivá hraničná oblasť si možno aj vďaka svojej minulosti ponechala prírodnejší charakter. Nie je to jazero, akoby názov napovedal, je to niva rieky Morava, inundačné územie, ktoré býva niekedy viac, či menej zaplavené. Popri rieke Morava sa nachádzajú dreviny mäkkého lužného lesa, predovšetkým vŕby a topole.

Devínske jazero je riečne jazero, mŕtve rameno Moravy a leží medzi jej ľavým brehom a korytom rieky Malina.

V roku 1846 sa začal stavať most medzi Devínskou Novou Vsou a Marcheggom.

Devín Lake is an area between the Morava River and Devínska Nová Ves. This former sensitive border area may have also retained a more natural character due to its past. It’s not a lake, as the name suggests; it’s a Morava River floodplain, an inundation area that is sometimes more or less flooded. Along the Morava River, there are softwood floodplain forests, primarily willows and poplars. At Devín Lake, we can observe storks, among other things, from around March 15th to August 15th.

Devín Lake is a river lake, a dead arm of the Morava, located between its left bank and the bed of the Malina River. The Devín Lake Meadow with an area of10.5 km² is the largest wet meadow in Slovakia. In the early 1960s, several graves from the Roman period were found here during sand extraction. Remnants from a more recent period include bunkers built in the 1930s. They are also called ropíky,” according to the abbreviation ROP – Directorate of Fortification Works. The crew consisted of 3 – 7 men, armed with machine guns, equipped with periscopes, grenade tubes (Wlachovský). Since 1993, the entire area has been included among wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The Morava floodplain has been listed as a significant bird area since 1992. Storks, herons, and up to 118 species of birds nest here. There are also many species of bats, snakes, the rare smooth snake, European beavers, and up to 62 species of fish in the Morava River (panorama.sk).

Also located here is the Marchegg Viaduct, which is actually already a technical monument, but is still used for railway transport. In 1846, construction began on a bridge between Devínska Nová Ves and Marchegg. At 474 meters long, it was one of the largest in Hungary at the time. During its history, it has been destroyed several times during wars but always rebuilt. The last reconstruction was in 1959 (Wlachovský).

Areál leží na polostrove, ktorého hranice tvoria toky Malého Dunaja a Váhu z jednej strany a mŕtveho ramena Malého Dunaja zo strany druhej (muzeum.sk).

K areálu vedie drevený most pre peších s celodrevenou zastrešenou konštrukciou. Nový most bol dvakrát prestavaný v rokoch 19972000 (novezamky.sk). Most je zo špeciálne napusteného agátového dreva a mal by vydržať približne 150 rokov (Milan Šalko).

The water mill in Kolárovo is a reconstructed floating mill – a boat mill anchored on the bank of the dead arm of the Little Danube (Martin Kiňo, Václav Sulek). These mills have Byzantine origins, mainly utilized in the Balkans (travelguide.sk). Floating mills were always anchored in places with the strongest currents, which they used to drive the mill wheels, making them independent of changes in the river’s water level (krasneslovensko.eu). The mill is a replica of a mill from Radvan nad Dunajom (Jiří Výborný). The original mill was built in 1920, and the current mill is based on period photographs, especially a faithful model created by a former mill employee, Lajos Suhaj (travelguide.sk). The mill itself houses the Museum of Water Milling (Martin Kiňo, Václav Sulek). Among other exhibits, visitors can see a unique machine for making fishing nets, one of the first in the world (slovakianguide.com). The boat mill is also listed among the national cultural monuments. The original mill was relocated to the Museum of Slovak Village in Martin in the 1960s (Martin Kiňo, Václav Sulek). The current mill has undergone slight modifications but remains fully functional. The area is located on a peninsula, bordered by the waters of the Little Danube and Váh rivers on one side and the dead arm of the Little Danube on the other (muzeum.sk).

Since the mid-90s, a complex for cyclists has been developing in the vicinity of the mill. Besides a residential building with a pub, there is also a small museum of old agricultural machinery and a family eco-farm with domestic animals (Jiří Výborný) – Vodný mlyn Farm – 133046. The complex includes a camping area with bungalows – Kemping Mlyn. A covered stage provides space for cultural events, and there are two playgrounds for children (novezamky.sk).

A wooden footbridge with a fully wooden roof structure leads to the area. With a length of 86 meters, it is considered one of the longest in Europe (muzeum.sk). It was built in 1992 according to the testimonies of witnesses to the original bridge, which was destroyed by ice floes in the mid-20th century. The pillars of the original bridge are visible in the summer when the water level is low. The new bridge was rebuilt twice in 1997 and 2000 (novezamky.sk). The bridge is made of specially impregnated agate wood and is expected to last approximately 150 years (Milan Šalko).

A Kolárovoi vízimalom egy felújított úszó malom – hajó malom, amely a Kis-Duna holtágának partján horgonyzik (Martin Kiňo, Václav Sulek). Ezeknek a malomnak a byzantin eredete van, főként a Balkánon használták (travelguide.sk). Az úszó malom mindig azokon a helyeken volt lekötve, ahol a legerősebb áramlatok voltak, amelyeket a malomkerekek meghajtására használtak, így függetlenek voltak a folyó vízszintjének változásaitól (krasneslovensko.eu). A malom egy replika a Radván nad Dunajom található malomról (Jiří Výborný). Az eredeti malomot 1920-ban építették. A jelenlegi malom alapját a korabeli fényképek és a malom egykori alkalmazottjának, Lajos Suhajnak a hű másolata képezi (travelguide.sk). A malomban közvetlenül kialakították a Vízimalmáriumot is (Martin Kiňo, Václav Sulek).

Obec Berg je obec Dolného Rakúska v okrese Bruck an der Leitha v nadmorskej výške 154 metrov nad morom (Wikipedia) na úpätí vrchu Königswarte (gemeindeberg.at). Chorvátsky názov pre obec je Pierga. Na ploche 9.47 km2 tu žije 757 obyvateľov. Neďaleko sa nachádza Bratislava, resp. jej miestna časť Petržalka. Do roku 1996 tvorila s obcou Wolfsthal jednu obec Wolfsthal-Berg.

Medzi obcami Kittsee, Berg, Bratislava tu nechávali Habsburgovci pochodovať vojsko a organizovali vojenské prehliadky. Napr. cisár František I., ale aj Napoleon (Róbert Pintér).

The village of Berg is a municipality in Lower Austria in the Bruck an der Leitha district at an elevation of 154 meters above sea level (Wikipedia) at the foot of the Königswarte mountain (gemeindeberg.at). The Croatian name for the village is Pierga. With an area of 9.47 km², it is home to 757 inhabitants. Nearby is Bratislava, specifically its district Petržalka. Until 1996, it formed a single municipality with the village of Wolfsthal called Wolfsthal-Berg. It is a popular destination for cyclists (Wikipedia). Berg is known as an agricultural and viticultural community (gemeindeberg.at).

The first settlers who laid the foundations of the village came from Bavaria in 800. The village has a history of being on the border, often destroyed, and rebuilt again (gemeindeberg.at). The first written mention of the village dates back to 862 under the name Pagus ad Pergo. There is a column of Saint Mary – a plague column located on the former edge of the village, on the border with Burgenland, which used to be the border between Austria and Hungary. It was probably built in memory of the plague epidemic of 1679 (Wikipedia).

During the Habsburg era, Königswarte served as an observation point. Habsburgs used to parade their troops and organize military reviews between the villages of Kittsee, Berg, and Bratislava. For example, Emperor Francis I and even Napoleon (Róbert Pintér).

Pajštún is a castle situated above the village of Borinka at an elevation of 486 meters above sea level. Several hiking trails lead to the castle, including one from the nearby Stupava. Hungarian King Ladislaus IV found himself in a dispute with the noble family Kösegiovcov, in which Rugerius of Tallesbrunn fought alongside the king. In recognition of his military merits, Rugerius acquired properties, and on one of them, he built the castle Peilenstein (Pelystan – Pajštún). Until 1948, the village of Borinka was also called Pajštún, named after the castle. In the mid-18th century, the castle was destroyed by fire. In June 1809, during the Napoleonic Wars, Pajštún was blown up by the French army (Information Board). The first mention of the castle Perostyan dates back to 1349. The name comes from the German Paullenstein” – Rock of Paulines, likely referring to the Pauline monks from the nearby Marianka (castrum.ic.cz).

During times of war, Pajštún served as a refuge for monks and sacred objects, such as the precious statue of the Virgin Mary. It was also referred to as Stupava Castle. In the 17th century, the Pálfy family reconstructed the castle. The mascarons on Pajštún Castle bear a striking resemblance to those at Bojnice Castle. Stone markers on both castles are identical, indicating the involvement of the same master builders, notably Pavel Pálfy (source: borinka.sk).

The castle is surrounded by the natural reserve Pod Pajštúnom, home to oak-hornbeam, beech, and lime-maple forest communities, as well as forest-steppe xerothermic communities. The area boasts over 300-year-old oak trees. Flora includes species such as Lathyrus niger, Melittis melisophyllum, Asperula odorata, Dentaria bulbifera, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria, Campanula rapunculoides, Asplenium trichomanes, Teucrium montanum, T. chamaedrys, Parietaria officinalis. Fauna features Lucanus cervus, Cerambyx cerdo, Zamenis longissimus, Parnassius mnemosyne (Information Board). The reserve, covering an area of 148 hectares, was declared in 1984 (stupava.sk).
