Fountain of St. George and the Dragon

According to legend, George was an officer in the Roman army. One day, he came to a town terrorized by a dragon. Initially, the dragon was satisfied with a daily supply of livestock, but later, it began demanding young girls. Desperate, the people selected victims by drawing lots. George arrived in the town when the lot fell on the king’s daughter. He killed the dragon with his spear and became a symbol of a knight triumphing over evil (bratislava.sk).

Először a sárkány a mindennapi marhahús-szállítmánnyal megelégedett, később azonban fiatal lányokat kezdett követelni. A kétségbeesett emberek a sorsolás útján választották az áldozatokat. György akkor érkezett a városba, amikor a király leánya esett ki a sorsolásból. Megölte a sárkányt lándzsájával, és a lovagot szimbólummá vált, aki legyőzi a gonoszt (bratislava.sk).

Rolandova fontána pred Starou radnicou – kamenná renesančná fontána s kruhovou nádržou ozdobenou maskarónmi a so stredovým pilierom na ktorom stojí postava stredovekého rytiera v brnení.

Old Town Hall

In the 14th century, there was a house with a tower on the site of today’s Old Town Hall, built by the mayor Jakub. The Old Town Hall was formed in the 15th century by merging several neighboring bourgeois houses on the Main Square, and over the centuries, it underwent several reconstructions. After the earthquake in 1599, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and the town hall tower was reconstructed in the Baroque style after a fire in the 18th century. In 1912, a rear wing was added in the Neo-Renaissance style from the courtyard side and in the Neo-Gothic style from Primaciálne Square. The town hall tower served a defensive purpose. When looking at the tower from the Main Square, you will find several interesting features – on the plinth, there is a plaque with the date February 1850, reminding of the water level during a flood when the Danube overflowed its banks. To the left of the Gothic window, at the level of the 1st floor, there is a walled cannonball reminding of the attacks by Napoleon’s armies in 1809. On the corner of the tower stands a statue of the Madonna from 1676. From the tower balcony, decisions of the parliament, royal decrees, and city council regulations were announced in the past. On the facade to the right of the Renaissance arcade, you can notice a fresco of an old man – a usurer from 1533. The City Museum is one of the oldest museums in Central Europe, founded in 1868. In the courtyard corner, there is an entrance to the exhibition of feudal justice and the history of the city. Concerts and theater performances take place on the Renaissance arcade courtyard in the summer (bratislava.sk).

Roland Fountain in front of the Old Town Hall – a stone Renaissance fountain with a circular basin adorned with mascarons and a central pillar on which stands the figure of a medieval knight in armor. The statue depicts the legendary guardian of municipal rights, Roland. In the lower part of the pillar, there is a smaller shell-shaped basin into which water sprays from the mouths of fish held by figurines – the so-called putti. Water was originally brought to the fountain through wooden pipes. The fountain was created for practical reasons at a time when there was a noticeable shortage of water in the city, as a direct response to a major fire that broke out during the coronation celebration of Maximilian and devastated a large part of the homes in the city. It is assumed that the author depicted the face of the then ruler on the statue of Roland (bratislava.sk).

Altes Rathaus

A városháza tornya védelmi célt szolgált.

A szobor Rolandot, a városi jogok őrzőjét ábrázolja. Az oszlop alsó részén egy kisebb kagylós medence található, amelybe víz spriccel a putti nevű halalakok szájából. A vizet eredetileg fa csöveken keresztül vezették a kúthoz.

Blue Church – Church of St. Elizabeth

The single-nave Secessionist Blue Church of St. Elizabeth with a cylindrical tower was built between 1910 and 1913 according to the design of Budapest architect Edmund Lechner. The church was constructed by the Pittel and Brausewetter company, which pioneered the use of reinforced concrete structures in the church’s architecture, supporting both the church vault and the organ loft. The church’s floor plan follows traditional styles, incorporating many elements borrowed from them. However, a completely new feature is the ornate plasterwork that imitates oriental ornamentation. The central element of the church’s front facade is a mosaic featuring the figure of St. Elizabeth holding roses in her cloak. Roses are also a fundamental element of the interior ornamentation. With this construction, Lechner created a new Hungarian national architectural style. The dedication of the Church of St. Elizabeth also reflected Hungarian national sentiment. St. Elizabeth was a native Hungarian saint from the royal Arpad dynasty (likely born in Bratislava Castle), and the church was intended to serve as a symbolic mausoleum for Empress Elizabeth (Sissi), the wife of Franz Joseph I (bratislava.sk).

A templom alaprajza a hagyományos stílusokat követi, sok elemet kölcsönöz tőlük. A rózsák a belső díszítés alapvető elemei is. A Szent Erzsébet-templom felszentelése is tükrözte a magyar nemzeti érzelmeket. Pôvodne na mieste SND stálo tzv. Stavovské divadlo postavené v rokoch 17741776. Budova slúžila obecenstvu s viacerými neskoršími úpravami až do roku 1884, teda viac než sto rokov. Slovak National Theatre – Historical Building

Originally, at the location of the Slovak National Theatre (SND), there stood the so-called Stavovské Theatre, built from 1774 to 1776. The building served the audience with several later modifications until 1884, more than a hundred years. After unfortunate fires in theater buildings in other cities, especially after the Vienna theater fire in 1881, the city of Prešporok (now Bratislava) decided to build a new theater building. It was constructed from 1885 to 1886. The operation in the new building opened on September 22, 1886, with a performance of the opera Bánk Bán by composer Ferenc Erkel, who himself conducted the first performance. Even after World War I, performances were held in the new building in both Hungarian and German. Gradually, actors from the Slovak National Theatre also took to its stage. Throughout the theater’s long history, it hosted the most significant personalities of the global opera scene, including F. Shalyapin, P. Mascagni, R. Strauss, G. Filip, M. Poppová, who performed on the most famous world stages (bratislava.sk).

The Ganymede Fountain in front of the Slovak National Theatre dates back to 1888. The eagle with the boy represents Zeus transformed into a bird of prey, carrying the beautiful boy Ganymede to Olympus, the abode of the gods. The perimeter of the stone basin of the fountain is adorned with turtles, frogs, and crayfish, supported by small figures of four children holding four types of Danube fish – carp, catfish, pikeperch, and pike. Water sprouts from the fish papules and falls into the basin (bratislava.sk).

Fokozatosan a Szlovák Nemzeti Színház társulatának színészei is megjelentek a színpadon. A színház hosszú története során a globális operaszínház legjelentősebb személyiségei léptek fel itt, köztük F. Salyapin, P. Mascagni, R. Strauss, G. Filip, M. Freni, P. Cappuccilli, R. Reznikov, J. Obrazcovová, és olyan táncosok, mint M. Fonteyn, A. Alonso, V. Vasiliev, és sokan mások. Jelenleg opera és balett működik itt. Sok jelentős operaszínházi személyiséget nevelt ki, például Peter Dvorský, J. Kundlák, J. Galla, E. Jenisová, E. Grúberová, L. Poppová, akik a világ legismertebb színpadain léptek fel (bratislava.sk).

A Ganymede-kút a Szlovák Nemzeti Színház előtt 1888-ból származik.

Podľa projektu inžinierov Arpáda Tesára, Jozefa Zvaru a architektov Jozefa Lacka, Ladislava Kušníra a Ivana Slameňa. Kvôli jeho výstavbe bola zbúraná značná časť bratislavského podhradia, synagóga, vrátane historicky hodnotných častí Vydrice. Podobnú konštrukciu má aj menší Hainburský dunajský most.

The SNP Bridge, until recently also called the New Bridge, is the largest single-pylon suspension bridge in the world (Wikipedia). It was constructed between 1967 and 1972, spanning almost 431 meters in length, 21 meters in width, and standing 95 meters tall, weighing 7,537 tons. The project was led by engineers Arpád Tesár and Jozef Zvara, along with architects Jozef Lacko, Ladislav Kušnír, and Ivan Slameň. Its construction resulted in the demolition of a significant portion of Bratislava’s lower town, including the synagogue and historically valuable parts of Vydrice. A similar design is found in the smaller Hainburg Danube Bridge. At the top of the pylon, at a height of 85 meters, there is a restaurant called UFO and an observation deck. UFO attracts 200,000 visitors annually. In 2001, it was declared the construction of the century in Slovakia in the category of bridge structures (wikipedia.sk). It spans the Danube River.

Most Lafranconi

Most Lafranconi je diaľničný most cez Dunaj, ktorý stavali v rokoch 19851991.

The Lafranconi Bridge is a highway bridge across the Danube, constructed between 1985 and 1991. It has a total length of 761 meters. Pedestrian and cycling paths are located on both sides. Originally intended to be named the Youth Bridge, it ultimately acquired its name from the former Lafranconi dormitory located on the left bank of the Danube. This dormitory was named after the Italian architect Enea Grazioso Lanfranconi. Lafranconi is a variation of his name. Lanfranconi mapped the Danube waterway and also dealt with flood protection (wikipedia.sk).

Most Apollo

Apollo Bridge, previously known as the Košická Bridge,” is located in Bratislava between the Prístavný Bridge and the New Bridge. Inside, it is truly fascinating, almost cosmic in some places. For most of us who do not navigate bridges daily, it is an exotic environment. Of course, it can often feel cramped, as there is not a lot of space within it.

Cyklomost slobody z Devínskej Novej Vsi do Schlosshofu

Cyklomost slobody má svoju zaujímavú históriu. Verejnosť ho pôvodne chcela nazvať Most Chucka Norrisa”.

Most splnil náročné požiadavky územia. Prísne boli rakúske environmentálne požiadavky, most je v chránenom území. V roku 1880 ho zničili ľadové kryhy a následne už nebol opravený (region-bsk.sk). Pri prácach boli nájdené pozostatky pôvodného mostného násypu a pôvodné pilóty (sme.sk). Most vedie ponad tieto historické časti.

The Cycle Bridge of Freedom has an interesting history. Initially, the public wanted to name it the Chuck Norris Bridge.”

The bridge had to meet demanding requirements due to strict Austrian environmental regulations, as it is located in a protected area. It consists of an extremely demanding, yet unverified steel structure. It spans the Morava River and is built in the original route of a baroque bridge (vydavatelstvoeurostav.sk). Its German name is Fahrradbrücke der Freiheit. It was opened on September 22, 2012 (Wikipedia). The design was created by Ing. arch. Milan Beláček (devinskainak.sk). During the reign of Maria Theresa in 1771, the first stone arched bridge over the river was built. It was later destroyed multiple times and rebuilt (Wikipedia). In 1880, it was destroyed by ice floes and was not repaired afterward (region-bsk.sk). During construction, remnants of the original bridge embankment and pilings were found (sme.sk). The bridge passes over these historical parts. It stands at a height of 21.5 meters above the Morava River, and the steel structure weighs 593 tons (devinskainak.sk). The pylons were not allowed to exceed the height of the forest (sme.sk).

A historical map shows the original Maria Theresa Bridge, which connected Schlosshof and Devínska Nová Ves from 1771. After the Hungarian revolution, the Austro-Prussian War, and bombing during World War II, it was definitively decommissioned in 1949. Remnants of the stone part of the bridge are still present on the Austrian side. The new Cycle Bridge of Freedom began construction on September 30, 2011, and was completed on June 27, 2012. The total length of the bridge, including access ramps, is 955 meters, with a span length of 525 meters. The elevation of the central part of the bridge is 4 meters, and the width is 4 meters (Information Board).

Staré domy

Hits: 2129

Staré domy často vyžadujú údržbu a renováciu.

Old houses stand as living witnesses to the past, carrying with them rich histories and character that sets their architecture apart from modern structures. These historic dwellings have unique stories that reflect the era in which they were built and, in many cases, the people who lived within their walls. The diversity in their design, construction, and style makes old houses fascinating places to explore. One significant aspect of old houses is their architecture. Ancient homes can be constructed from various materials such as bricks, stones, or wood. Their structures often reflect the building techniques of the time and traditional local craftsmanship. Every detail, from window frames to entrance doors, can tell a tale about the era in which they were erected. In addition to their architecture, old houses often bear historical markers. These can be memorial plaques, distinctive details, or other elements that refer to bygone periods. These homes can also be part of heritage and cultural legacy, representing crucial pieces of local history.

Another intriguing aspect of old houses lies in their interiors. Ceiling heights, ornamental details, vaults, and fireplaces can create a unique atmosphere that differs from modern living spaces. Many old houses boast original wooden floors, windows, and doors, adding authenticity and charm. However, it’s essential to note that old houses often require maintenance and renovation. Their aged constructions may be susceptible to wear and tear. On the flip side, this care contributes to preserving historical and cultural heritage for future generations.

Old houses have their place in the present as well. Many people choose to live in old houses, seeking a unique and authentic lifestyle. They appreciate the character, style, and history that some modern structures might not offer.

In conclusion, old houses are more than just dwellings; they are places that carry our past histories and stories. Their preservation and restoration are crucial for maintaining our cultural heritage and connecting with preceding generations.

Skočil mu do voza a prevrátil ho.

Smolenice majú dve časti: Smolenice a Smolenickú Novú Ves (pôvodne Neštich).

Smolenice is a village situated at the foothills of the Small Carpathians. The first mention of Smolenice, then called Solmus, dates back to the year 1256. At that time, it belonged to the Pezinok-Saint George Counts. By the end of the 14th century, it was owned by Stibor of Stiborice, and later again by the Pezinok-Saint George Counts. In the 16th century, it belonged to the Orság family, and after the 17th century, to the Pálfy family. Within the village’s territory lies Smolenice Castle, surrounded by a beautiful park. A significant historical site is Molpír, a Hallstatt hillfort, a princely fortification dating back to the older Iron Age (7 – 6th century BC), featuring massive stone fortifications with gates and towers (Information Board). The hillfort covered an area of 12 – 14 hectares, with three courtyards protected by ramparts. The fortifications consisted of loose stones, reinforced embankments, and wooden structures. Foundations of towers, a round bastion, and residential wooden huts were discovered on-site. The inhabitants engaged in tool-making, knife production, weapon crafting, bronze casting, and the production of stone grinders. The most important was likely the production of threads and fabrics, and at its peak, around 800 people lived here (Wikipedia.sk). Molpír is considered a former political and economic center of the wider region and disappeared in the 4th century BC (Information Board).

Near the hillfort is a Slavic burial site from the pre-Great Moravian and Great Moravian periods, which disturbed a barrow from the Middle Bronze Age. In the vicinity of Smolenice, a relatively large number of Neolithic artifacts were found, such as axe hammers, stone axes, grinding stones, and ceramics. From the period around 1700 – 1500 BC, remains of the Middle Danubian barrow culture with its distinctive grooved pottery were discovered. Smolenice is associated with Smolenice Karst, which includes a nature trail of the same name. The National Nature Reserve Driny Cave, the only publicly accessible cave in the Small Carpathians, is part of it. Another national nature reserve, Dolina Hlboče, is located above the village. Záruby (767 m) is the highest peak in the Small Carpathians, overlooking Smolenice, along with other peaks like Veterlín (Source: Information Board).

According to local legend, the site of the current village was once a forest with a road passing through it. Once, a resin worker (smoliar) was traveling along the road with a wagon full of resin. Nobles were hunting in the forest, chasing a deer that, startled, ran onto the road right into the resin worker! It jumped into his wagon and overturned it. The resin spilled on the ground. The terrified resin worker exclaimed, Smole nic!” which means Nothing but resin!” And so, this place began to be called Smolenice (panorama.sk).

Smolenice consists of two parts: Smolenice and Smolenická Nová Ves (originally Neštich). Count Jozef Pálfy built a chemical plant for wood processing in the valley below Majdán near the village of Horné Orešany between 1880 and 1883. A forest horse railway began to be built, later an industrial railway from the factory to the station. The entire network was dismantled after 1960. In 1968, the history of another chemical plant producing paints, Chemolak, began. Notable personalities from Smolenice include parachute inventor Štefan Banič and regional historian Štefan Jastrabík (Wikipedia.sk).
