The late-Gothic wooden main altar of St. James, standing at a height of 18.6 meters, is the tallest of its kind globally, crafted from linden wood between 1507 and 1517 in Master Paul’s workshop (levoca.sk). The square is lined with over 50 burgher and patrician houses, many named after former owners (levoca.sk).

During the 14th to 15th centuries, the town became a Central European trade center (levoca.sk). The facade features paintings representing symbols of civic virtues: temperance, prudence, courage, patience, and justice. Today, the town hall is connected to a Renaissance tower built between 1656 and 1661, serving as a belfry. The Cage of Shame in front of the town hall originates from the 16th century. From the 16th century to 1923, Levoča was the seat of Spiš County (levoca.sk). In 1746 – 1747, mathematician, physicist, and astronomer Maximilian Rudolf Hell taught at the Jesuit gymnasium. In 1844, on this occasion, the revolutionary song, later the anthem Nad Tatrou sa blýska,” was composed and first sung here (Kristeková).

V 1. storočí sem prichádzali germánske kmene Kvádi a Markomani. Začiatkom 5, storočia ubudlo obyvateľstva, pravdepodobne časť odišla v roku 409 s Vandalmi a Alanmi. V prvej polovici 5. storočia vďaka odchodu Markomanov do Norica.
