Strážnice is a small town located near the borders with Slovakia in southern Moravia, practically a stone’s throw from Skalica.

In German, it is called Strassnitz. Approximately 6,000 inhabitants live here (Wikipedia CZ). In the 5th century, Slavs built a settlement in the area that is now Strážnice. Prior to them, Celts inhabited the region four centuries before Christ, followed by Germans from the end of the 1st century (Skácel). The beginnings of Strážnice are associated with the fortification of the Czech state borders during the rule of Přemysl Otakar II in the second half of the 13th century. The city’s name itself is derived from its guarding function. Strážnice Castle was built in 1260. Captain Petr Strážnický played a significant role in the city’s development. In the early 15th century, the Žerotín family purchased the city, supporting fraternal education. In 1604 – 1605, Ján Ámos Komenský, who had an aunt in the city, attended such a school. In May 1605, the city was burned down (Vratislavský).

The town’s dominant feature is the White Tower of Strážnice, built in 1615 (straznice-mesto.cz). Consideration for the establishment of an ethnographic open-air museum began in the early 20th century. However, it was only in 1973 that construction commenced (skanzenstraznice.cz). Folklore festivals take place here at the turn of June and July (Vratislavský).
